As a school for adults, we intend to put graphic soft on our curriculum.
We've had some experience with CorelDraw in the past, but now hesitate to
use Illustrator instead. Can anyone tell me from personal experience which
program is best and why?

You'll get as many answers for this question as there are illustrator users
and Coreldraw users combined, for my part ( I have used both ) I find
Illustrator the easiest to use. The speed with which I can use the keyboard
shortcuts in tandem with the mouse means I can get things done a lot quicker
in illustrator. The working space in Coreldraw also seems a little too
cluttered, though if you are on a budget Coreldraw is good (no question of
that ) and much cheaper.

Each person has their own preference. I have used both, for print and for
web. Overall, I prefer Illustrator. For print media, it is far more industry
standard. For web, it has more support from Photoshop than Corel gives with
Photopaint, however Corel has Rave now and I don't know if Illustrator has
something compatible with it. I wasn't too impressed with Rave anyway.
Illustrator also has the support through Acrobat (.pdf files). In general,
my statement would be Illustrator is for the professionals and Draw is for
offices that do graphics as an aside, rather than the main product.

Hi,
I use both. Illustrator has a somewhat higher acceptance in the
professional arena, but Coreldraw is a close second. Coreldraw is much
cheaper, if price is a factor, and it has more readily accessble special
effects. It's probably easier to learn, too.Coreldraw 9 can be had for as
little fas $39.00 on some web stores. I bought Coreldraw 11(minus
Photopaint) for $74.00 from Buy.com some months ago.

I jump between CorelDRAW, Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Freehand on a
regular basis. They all have their various strengths and weaknesses.

The main reason I like CorelDRAW is its very good toolset. I can do a lot
more in technical object creation within that program (and at a far faster
rate) than I can in AI and FH. CorelDRAW has a faster screen refresh than
AI and FH. CorelDRAW does have one major drawback. It doesn't do well for
print production, at least not without a lot of help from proprietary
software.

I like Illustrator for the way it integrates with Adobe Photoshop and After
Effects. Although I'll generate a lot of paths within Corel, generally I'll
take EPS exports from there to modify further in Illustrator before sending
to Photoshop or After Effects. Illustrator has improved its toolset a great
deal over the past couple versions, giving the program a few creative
options not offered in competing vector apps.

Freehand has fallen out of favor quite a bit lately, with no small part of
blame going to Macromedia for neglecting the program in favor of putting
nearly all their development resources into web app development. They also
let Fontographer die on the vine, which really angered me. Still, Freehand
has a color print engine second to none. It's print production quality is
what sold me on that app.

Illustrator for sure

I find that corel crashes way more than any adobe product i have ever used.
besides illustrator is more of a standard in the industry and will likely
have a more sustainable lifetime. (e.g. more upgrades and longer life)
