Hi Everyone,

I was wondering. Has any one ever had the experience where Illustrator 10.
for PC restarts on WinXP PRO for no apparent reason when either Placing
photos, browsing to files or just moving some element.

It occurs periodically so I thought it was the memory but tested both the
Programme and memory on other systems but got no problem.

Could it be OS?? or another program maybe.

All software is updated with the latest patches.

Please advise.

Hey, I'm encountering the very same at the moment. I can tell mine is gonna
crach through a sequence of clicking noices. It generally happens when using
resources hungry activities (3DMAX, Illustrator 3D extrusion,or rendering
inSwift3D).

Trying to work out if its a memory or CPU thing.

I use Ill 10 on XP pro and have no problems at all.

In XP you can set it to show a blue-screen-of-death with some error
information on it, rather than rebooting automatically. Then you at least
get an erroneous file or module you can work from.

Clicking noises??? No pc is supposed to be clicking...

floppy drive, depends how pc savvy he is.

Try running scan disk on the hard drives. What is your hard drive and
your scratch disk configuration? How
much memory does the system have?

I had a similar problem with a blue screen memory error on a Win2k
system, it had two 512mb modules, one
was taken out and there has not been a problem since. The memory was
tested before hand and no problems
were found either. Our IT guy has not come back about testing the
memory, will try and find out.

Some clicking or knocking noises suggest a drive about to die! I've found
that creating a Hardware profile where the video card is disabled (NOT
removed) will solve some problems. Boot into this profile and see if the
problem still occurs.

The PC has 1GB PC2400 DDR memory I think. It is a new system so l don't think that the Hard drive will be crashing already. And the Whole computer doesn't restart just the Illustrator or maybe the folder gives me a windows explorer error.

Also see if your CPU is overheating. Download one of the free temperature utilities to check your temperature. Sometimes one of power leads might have gotten disconnected on one of the fans inside your computer.

Will try. But I'm in a room that's like 15 degrees Centigrade.

Actually as your machine is very new it could be the hard drive. A hard
drive is more likely to die when it is either brand new
or quite old. The old ones usually die from long term use but a new will
die because of a fault. It is not uncommon and usually
happens within a few weeks of using it. We had three identical machines
a couple of years ago and the hard drive on one died
within a couple of weeks of having it, this was after the IT guys had
used it to set it up.
