"Acrobat PDF file format is having difficulties"

| I've read various postings about this problem. On our machines
(running AI 10, Photoshop 7, Office 2000 etc on windows XP)when
Illustrator is open and another application is opened this message
pops up freezing the open applications. It happens even if we're not
doing a copy/paste operation. Favourite programs for this to happen
with are Photoshop, Powerpoint and Word - which is a pain if you are
trying to cut and paste text into Illustrator. This problem is a real
pain!!! Our only runaround is to open the applications we think we'll
need first and then open Illustrator - this cuts down the number of
times the problem occurs. For interest, changing the pasting
preferences from PDF to AICB made no difference!!

I only get that message sometimes when I am save an ai file and decides
it is in use. Firstly, check
whether you have the latest update 10.0.3, if not update it. When it
does freeze is there anything in
particular that you are attempting to do in illustrator itself. If the
update doesn't work try deleting the
preferences file, search for 'aiprefs' this should be located within the
user folder in the documents
and settings folder. Once you have deleted the preferences file all your
pallets and settings will be
reset also you will need to redo your scratch disks too. I use the same
programs but on a Win2k
machine without any problems.

Thanks for this... We're not on 10.0.3 so will try this, together with
deleting the prefs file. As to what we are doing when Illustrator
freezes, that's the weird thing. It seems to be the act of opening
another program that causes the problem. Even with a blank canvas open
in Illustrator the message will appear as soon as another Program is
opened. DAVE

Sounds like what's happening has to do with the clipboard. If you still
have this problem after updating to 10.0.3, try going to the "Files and
Clipboard" panel of the preferences and turn off PDF in the clipboard.
Unless you need to copy and paste to InDesign, you should be ok without
PDF on the clipboard.

| Paul,
This was our initial thought too... but after updating to 10.0.3 and
turning the PDF pasting format off in the Clipboard the problem still
occurs
