My version of Illustrator is exhibiting some odd behaviour.
For one thing, when i draw something and then move the object I often
get some sort of vestigal lines on the artboard. If I zoom in or out,
this sometimes clears the problem and they dissappear. I tend to get
this a lot when working with guides. Is this a bug in the program, or is
it just my machine? It's big irritation at the moment...
I have a pretty good graphics card [a 128mb nVidia]... I was wondering
of there where any issues with this brand...
Also, when I try to access my fonts from the character palette, they are
no longer there! Although they are still accessible from the main
drop-down menu at the top of the page...
D'oh! Are my prefernces buggered or something?

If anyone can help it would be appreciated,

many thanks

What version of Illustrator are you using? Which point release is it?

Sounds like a screen redraw issue... Try updating the videocard drivers?
Detonators?

I'm pretty sure it's your machine. This also happens to me on one of my
older Macs. I'm not sure what causes it but it's either your video card
(as someone else suggested) or not enough RAM. Try running only
Illustrator and reducing the number of undos to see if that helps.

If not, you're probably going to have to put up with it or get a
better/upgraded machine.

I just wrote that I have the very same artifacts in Ill. CS with radeon
graphic card (although I don't think it's the card's fault)

I use CE fonts - Illustrator was unusable (crashed within 3min after
starting) without a patch...

That is weird, your specs are fine though I'm not a fan of the nVidia
based cards for 2d work.

No, and i am discovering another thing, the card overheats like i cannot
believe. last night, i put my hand near it to test the temp. and it was
scolding hot to touch. So, i took it out and stuck my old 32mb ge force
back in... my machine's running sweet now.. what a shame though: a £250
card that i can't use... well, not unless i find some other fan or
heatsink for it... wonder if anyone else has had similar problems. It
was also very noisy at times, like a car changing gears and , now and
again, a sound like a sword being hit agains steel... [sorry, bad
metaphor, but i am tired today! :) ]

If your video card overheats, it might be getting too much voltage.

My 2 cents' ...

well, if anything, i think it may be that i don't have *enough* voltage.
I am using a 350w supply.. i talked to someone the other day in a local
computer shop who said that it is now common for people to buy 450w PUs...
I don't think that's the problem, but thanks for the suggestion... I
think its just that the heatsink and fan are somehow not working as they
should...

How much voltage does your graphics card need? If you have an older
motherboard supplying (for example) 6 volts to a graphics card that really
uses only 3.3 volts ... welllll, that'd be a problem.

LOL! Think yourself lucky - when they brought out the cards abased on
the FX58/9 they were double height and apparently, the cooling fans so
extreme that when you started the computer (and this is the
description I read) it sounded like a 747 taking off... ;-)
