Author Dragging multiple selections problems

When I select any or all of a collection of objects on different layers,
they just snap back to original position when I try to move them by dragging
or by using arrows. If I do something like delete them and then Ctrl-Z them
back or move them numerically I can then drag 'n drop them anywhere I want.
It doesn't seem to matter if they're grouped or anything. It's driving me
mad and I'm sure it's just me bring stupid, can someone help please?

Thanx in advance for any help,

Matt

First look if your objects are not locked? (Menu==>Object==>Lock).

If not, Laura would say (and she is right): delete your preferences.

Thanx for your reply. Nothing locked. I can delete my preferences?

Thanx again,

Matt

Yes you can, without being punished. Of course the next time
you start Illustrator the default screen will pop up, but
that is not a big deal.

I am on Mac, there it is in the Preference folder in the
System folder. Do not know about Windows. I am sure someone
else can give those directions.

If you are using windows it is best to search for AIPrefs, different
versions have them in different places. If you are using XP or 2000 with
more than one user make sure you delete the one in the folder with your
log on name. You will need to close Illustrator first but beware you
lose all your settings, i.e. palette positions.

Before you delete your preferences file just check you don't have 'snap
to grid' or smart guides turned on. Also does it happen in any other
files? If not it could just be that file has corrupted somehow so try
copying your work to a new blank file and repeat the moving around.

If it happens in the newly created file or in others then delete your
preferences.

There was a widely-pirated beta of AI 10 with this bug. Perhaps the
place to sold it to you was selling pirated copies. What does the
splash screen say for the version?

I am not aware of any shipping version of Illustrator with this bug.
