Author Woodcut portrait effect?

Not sure if this is the correct term for it, but does anyone know of a
woodcut filter (yeah, I have that little talent) or similar tool that can
give the look of the portraits in the Wall Street Journal?

Examples:

Alternatively, what is the least labor-intensive way to get this result?

Thanks for your help.

[For extra credit, who can tell the class why they call it a woodcut?]

Laura,

Just had a look at your site out of curiosity, very nice but I noticed
one thing. Is the photography heading (large ones underneath your
business blurb) supposed to be higher than the other ones?

no. I just put the Christmas decorations up and haven't had time to see if
they're working right. Thanks, I'll fix it.
