EMERGENCY HELP NEEDED

| I finally have a new project but it's a rush job. I have to do
full-color bleed folder, 300dpi. I need to create a background
and some art effects. I want the background to sort of
emmulate a fiber type paper stock with gradient. First,
which would be best for this, Illustrator9 or Photoshop6,
for print quality? Should I create the background in PS and
export as Illy to do the rest there? My other real problem
is hard disk space. I've been on such a tight (nonexistent)
budget for so long that I'm ill equipped. When I started to
create the bg in PS I either got "scratch disk is full" or
"can't save because the disk is full". I've been compressing
files since I have no way to store them. So, I need to create
the smallest file I can and still be good for high res output.
AND, I have to have finish for sometime tomorrow morning.
I need this gig to go well. It will pay for upgrades and there
is more where it came from.
DESPERATELY YOURS,
inez

your primary concern.

| Well, my client is an ad agency and the printer is theirs, probably
someone like Folder Express or Admore. The folder size is pretty
standard, 9x12 folded with two 4" pockets on the inside. And IF
I can gt the bg done I can eps it or whatever, but the agency knows
which programs I'm using, and the folder printers I have specs
from all support PDF, Illy, Quark, PS, and Freehand.
My immediate and urgent need is to simply be able to produce it
as cleanly as possible and actually be able to save it on my freaking
computer. (which is Mac G4 Yikes, 832mb ram, OS 8.6; BTW)
When this last compression is done I should have at least 1GB
of free disk space, will that be enough?

| Oh, the size comes approximately 21x17 with .5" bleed margins,
if they print pockets.

What you want to achieve with the background is best done in
Photoshop IMHO.
Then make the needed Ilustrator files (and other PS files
if needed) and place them in Quark (like you said you had)
and add text components.
For the lack of space on your HD:
- go down to 200 DPI for the background, should be enough
- make DCS files of the photoshop files, and use those as
kind of a preview in Quark. The with those belonging (color
separated) EPS files you could write to a CD-R ? You say you
have no way to store, but how do you think you well get that
large file to the printer?
- let the printer combine the appropriate EPS files on his
larger computer
I hope I am not talking rubbish (not sure if you can split
the EPS's and the DCS without being punished).

| By the way:
how large is the resulting background??

| IMHO you are better off working in a vector space than Photshop. You might run into problems trying
to apply a gradient on a pattern fill....but, you might be able to place a gradient layer on top of
your texture fill and work with the opacity. If you did the whole piece in Illy, your file size
should be less 100kb.

| That might be true. But the texture thing is better in
Photoshop is my feeling. Maybe just do the texture in PS and
play with the gradient in Illy?

| So far I'm working in Illy, VVEERRYY SLOOOOWWLLYY. I haven't
worked in it that much and not this type of thing, just logos and
lineart and stuff. I've given 300mb of ram. So far the file is only
8.3mb. Do I have something setup wrong that it's so slow? I
have 832mb ram total. Do I need to work in virtual memory?
Should I assign more meomory to Illy? So far I have 2 layers,
a gradient layer and rasterized layer with grain effect and
transparency, and that's it. It's not quite the look I ws after,
but OK. How on earth can resulting file be on 100kb though???
An EPS?
If the resulting file stays under 15mb I can compress it for a
nice slow e-mail or ftp. I won't be sending to the printer in this
case I don't think. I'll be sending to the agency. If I have to though
I'll haul my computer someplace and pay them to burn a CD for me.
I need to really learn this program, but for now I just need to get
this work out and not have it be a problem for anyone (but me).

300Mb must be more than sufficient.
Is Virtual Memory off?? Turn it on. I have only 320Mb RAM,
and virtual mem is set on 990Mb (on a small 6Gb disk, of
which 2Gb is left), everything works smooth.
About the size I do not know, the rasterized layer asks a
lot I guess, but Illy should give pretty small files,
because of the vectors.
Is the layer from Photoshop? How large is it?

I've always worked with virtual memory off as it had always
caused problems. I can try it. I have 832mb ram on a 10gb
drive which is down to 1.5gb space.

It's an Illy layer, but rasterized to create the texture effect.

Take care, as you probably know Virtual Memory takes up hard
disk space. So do not go as far as I did.

| That might help, I think I have something like 20 undos.

One suggestion I can make is not to do your work with the
full-resolution image in your Illustrator document. Save a file with
just your background, then either work without it (if you can do so an
still get a feel for what it looks like) or re-rasterize it at a low
resolution. Then when you're done, drop in the high-resolution version.
A page-sized raster at print resolution (I'm assuming 300 dpi) uses a
lot of memory both in your application and on the disk in Illustrator's
scratch storage. Illustrator will work a lot better without it.

Actually this isn't really true for Illustrator -- Illustrator will
throw away undos the moment it looks like memory might be getting low.
The default setting for Illustrator is to keep at least 5, but it will
keep as many as it can as long as it has no other use for the memory.
If you're using a system with virtual memory (Windows or OS X),
Illustrator will throw undos away in order to try to keep everything in
real memory and not have to start swapping. (I don't know exactly what
the numbers are, but Illustrator starts discarding undos when your
memory usage gets to something like 75% of the physical memory.)
