Greetings,

I work in prepress, and recently had a couple of Illustrator files that
would not rip on level 2 rips such as the Agfa Star 600 for a SelectSet
7000 or the Xitex PS2 rip for a Dolev 800. Both rips produced this error:

PS: %%[Error: undefined]%%
PS: %%[OffendingCommand: Adobe_Illustrator_AI5_vars ]%%
PS: %%[Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%

Both files had several layers with large CMYK images, some with clipping
paths. The files had been worked in Illustrator 8 and 10. The output was
done from Illustrator 8 by placing eps versions of these files in Preps,
with fonts and images included.

By elimination, the problem was narrowed down to one particular layer in
each file. What finally solved the problem was to create a new layer
above the problem layer, move one by one, the elements of the original
layer to the new layer, and delete the old layer, all done in
Illustrator 8. Note that after moving all the elements to the new layer,
nothing could be selected or viewed in the old layer, in outline mode
even when zooming out to 10% viewing size. Yet something on that layer
was causing the problem.

Does anybody know if this "Adobe_Illustrator_AI5_vars" error is
specifically something from Illustrator 10? Perhaps Paul Asente could comment.

Thanks for any insights,

Al Ferrari
