Illy 10. When I try to copy and paste my entire illustration to another
file, Illy does so, but changes the stacking order of the layers which
means I have to go back and re-arrange. Is there anyway to avoid this
re-stacking incorrectly? Why can't it just copy and paste in the exact
order that it is in when I copy it? Thanks for any help.

Are the layers in your new document set the same as those in your
original?

Is there any reason why you need to retain the layers of the original
(instead of just their order) in your new document? If not, why not
flatten your artwork before copying it to the new document, then just
don't save the flattened change.

Neil

Well, I have to save all of the layers in the original document and
paste them into the new file. Basically, here is my scenario. I'm doing
a four frame cartoon for my Illy class. I am drawing each frame
(containing many layers) in a separate file so that screen redraw won't
be too bad as I work on them. Then I need to take all four Illy files
(the four completed frames) and paste them into one file for submittal
in class. The professor wants to see all of the layers, so the flattened
scenario won't work in this case. While I can certainly go and restack
the layers in the one complete file, it is time consuming and
frustrating. I guess I wanted to know if there was some way to lock the
stack order before copying and pasting into the final document.

Have you tried "placing"
as opposed to copy and pasting?

Placing--when I try to place, Illy doesn't give me the option of placing
an AI file. If I save it in a format that can be placed (ie, pdf, tif
etc), I will lose all layers, won't I?

You can't place an AI file in AI.
In the Layers palette, click on the little triangle on the upper right and
select "paste remembers layers."

Turn on "Paste Remembers Layers" in the Layers palette menu.
