Let me know whether the Flash file loads dead center in your screen,
what OS you're using, what browser and what yer screen res is set at.

This new method ~should~ work on Macs, unlike the CSS vertical
centering method, which completly frells on the Mac. Like the CSS
method this one is also W3C compliant.

OS Mepis Linux 2.6.4

1024x768

Mozilla - dead centre

Konqueror - Only lower half of page appears in window, unscrollable.

You might want to add a message for Konqueror users telling them to grow up

Yeah Konqueror seems to be a really failing browser, even worse than
Opera. Someone sent me this via email:

:Why does Konqueror crash on every page with Flash?
:
:This is a result of a clashing symbol in both the flash plugin and the
:XFree86 libGLU (OpenGL utility lib). Upon closing an embedded flash
:view, the wrong function is called which heavily corrupts memory and
:leads to either immediately or delayed crashes, lockups and worse.
:The only solution that is currently known is either to install Qt
:without OpenGL support or to not use the Flash plugin. You can't
:combine both until this symbol clash is somehow solved. Unfortunately
:we cannot do much about this issue, unless Macromedia is willing to
:help. Another reason for Konqueror to crash on every page using a
:Netscape plugin is the use of gcc3. Plugins can't work with gcc3
:because they are linked to gcc2's libstdc++, which is incompatible
:with gcc3's libstdc++.

Are you on drugs? Asking for Mac/Linux opinions? Bizarre

Anyway...

FF/Mozilla = loads fine

Konqueror/Opera (neither of which I use) = loads in the top 1/3 of the
window.

ie - didn't load. I got a black line across the top of the window - maybe 10
pixels thick, then white on the rest of the window.

Nope and nope for Mac OS X 10.2 with Safari 1.0.3 and IE 5.2. It's
horizontally centered under Safari, but you only see the bottom half or
so of it (it's positioned off the top of the screen). Under IE, it's
just in the upper left corner as though it's not positioned at all.

One more failure on the pile, Mattie, Linux 2.6.12, Mozilla 1.7.10, screen
at 1024x768, image off towards the upper left. But do keep trying, it
makes so many people laugh at your skills.

Can you test it again for me, I just made some alterations. The way
it's set up now is ~should~ work perfectly on Safari and IE on the
Mac...according to this site anyway:
http://www.quirksmode.org/viewport/compatibility.html

I used document.documentElement.offsetWidth/Height for Opera and then
self.innerWidth/Height for everything else (they don't mention
Konqueror though, so it might not work on that).

Opera 8.02, Linux.

Flash object appears raised 380 pixels *above* the *top* of the page!

Try replacing the first two lines of your "load.js" file with these few
lines:

lspace = (document.documentElement.clientWidth - 760) / 2;
tspace = (document.documentElement.clientHeight - 424) / 2;
lspace = (lspace < 0) ? 0 : lspace;
tspace = (tspace < 0) ? 0 : tspace;

which will set lspace and tspace to 0 any time your
document.documentElement thing doesn't work.

Alternatively, try replacing the proprietary "document.documentElement"
with "document.body", which is overall better supported.

I got the same result for both browsers (half off the top of the screen
on Safari, no positioning on IE).

You can try the <table> <td valign="middle" align="center"> thing, but
what I've discovered about that is that it won't work if you include a
<!DOCTYPE="whatever"> definition (or maybe I wasn't defining the right
doctype).

I know you sneered at using tables to format the page before, but if it
works, it works.

It doesn't fail because of the <!DOCTYPE>; it fails because you're a lamer.

Well I don't mind using tables, it's just that the peanut gallery will
start screaming about W3C compliancy. I might just have to give in
the old adage, "Can't please everyone." though.

*ponders*

....actually, now that I think about it I could use the table method
but then encapsulate it into the .js script and that way it would
still validate.

Mozilla 1.7.11, Firefox 1.0.6, Opera 8.0.2, under Gentoo Linux
(kernel 2.6.12-gentoo-r4) still working fine. Using Shockwave Flash
plugin v7.0 r25 if that helps.

Uncle Antny, thank you for reminding me there are browsers other than
Firefox. I got the same thing as you with safari 1.3 (still osx 10.3.9, blah
blah.) and it's the whole page that's off the screen, too; not just your
little flash loading thing. And I couldn't face trying IE, I've never used it
on this machine and that's a record I'd like to keep...

The documentElement property isn't proprietary. It's defined in the W3C DOM.

documentElement of type Element, readonly
This is a convenience attribute that allows direct access to the
child node that is the root element of the document. For HTML
documents, this is the element with the tagName "HTML".

-- DOM 2 Core, 1.2 - Fundamental interfaces, Document interface

When in "Standards" mode, IE treats the HTML element as the canvas (not
BODY), so various dimension-related properties should be read from there.

No text version. So if the surfer does not have Flash 7 on his computer,
he's shit out of luck unless he wants to wait several minutes for a

Well, much as I hate to actually use you as an author of words of
wisdom, but as you once said (paraphrased), it's standard if it works in
all the browsers.

XXXX the W3C.

Like I said, if you want to validate, you'll probably have to experiment
with the doctype declaration. If you omit that, most everything works.

Once again, XXXX the W3C.

LOL!

Actually I quite like the current Mac OS. I think it seems to have a nice
mix of usability and stability - especially when compared to System 7 -
System 8. (I never tried system 9.) My father-in-law uses a G4 with OSX
for his work. (He's an editor.)

If the hardware weren't so XXXXing expensive and single-sourced I might
have looked at buying more macs recently.

Instead I upgraded from Windows to Linux. :)

You can pick up an older G3 (Blue & White) or G4 for cheap ($100-200),
which will run OS X (up to Tiger, but the next version probably won't
run on the G3). It's not fast, but it works. I just needed it for
compatibility testing, and now I use it for usenet because it pisses
Dave off.

Thats what microsoft said after it pushed netscape out the way - the
result is all the xbrowser problems we see today.

Vampicramps has a horrible fear of iframes...we're not quite certain
why, but we believe some kind of physical abuse from her parents may
be linked.

Still no content. Still no text version. Still no server-side
scripting, just ECMAscript crap that most sensible people will disable
before visiting a broken site like his.

but I'm sure PJ Retard knew that.

If they do then they'll see the text version, which is good, morons
like that need things as simple as possible, I wouldn't want to do
something like scare them with Flash...hell that'd be like chasing
after a cave retard with a stick of a fire whilst screaming like a

Thats one huuuuge file!

Segfaults firefox. error given is

/usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher: line 116: 23477 Segmentation fault "$mozbin" "$@"
firefox-bin exited with non-zero status (139)

Works in Mozilla and Opera.

Well if yer on dialup I suppose it might seem that way...it's actually
only 2mb. I might include a lil playable "game" of sorts during the
loading, something kinda like this old prototype I built:
http://www.backwater-productions.ne..._platform/game/
(only it'd work about a billion times better in Flash, especially with
the Key.isDown function).

Of course, 1.25mb of that is from the ripple effect. It's custom
chit, but the rainbowing in the ripple combined with the alpha
transparency layer just shot the 6 lil frames right through the roof.
I might modify it, make em smaller and then stretch em and maybe stick
to a single hue, that would reduce the size to around a 100 kilobytes
or so...wouldn't look quite as cool though.

Hrmmm...I wonder if that has to do with the size of Flash file, the
custom DTD, or something else entirely. I tested it on Firefox for
Windows and it worked flawlessly. Hopefully if more people are having
trouble with it on Linux (or teh MacOS) they can let me know

I should replicate the plain text version in some <no embed> tags...or
better yet, just put the plain text version straight into the site,
but keep the font black and then just add <font color="white"> to the
the noscript and no embed tags, that would cut down on redundancy.
