Author JS to check for existing and add new menu items to a popUp Menu

In Acrobat 6, I presently use a popUp Menu to select and assign menu items as values to a number of form text fields. However, the end user is also allowed to edit as well as enter different text values into a form text field in lieu of selecting a value
from the menu items in the popUp Menu. This noted, is there a JS I can use to check to see if the text value entered in a form field was selected from the popUp Menu and, if not, add the new text value to the list of menu items in the popUp Menu?
