Camera Raw 4.0 and CS2

I see the new Camera Raw will not work in CS2.
If one buys a new camera, supported by a 4.x version,
but does not yet wish to update PS, can one use the
associated new DNG to convert the raw photos, then
use ACR 3.7 under CS2? Annoying, but workable if so.
Looking at their readme, I see no obvious reason to have
made 4.0 incompatible with CS2 other than trying to force
upgrades.
