Hi Mike, your challenge -idea is very good and inspiring but in my
opinion the current limitations are way too severe. The originals are
JPGs and some kind of editing has been already applied. Only < 280 kB
versions are accepted on your server.
I'd be much more interested in a challenge from RAW to best quality
Jpeg. Anyway, here is my try:
From this "original" (it suffers from rather severe Jpeg damage):
http://www.curvemeister.com/copperm...Africa-1024.jpg
to my version:
http://www.aim-dtp.net/aim/temp/Dom...a-1024-timo.jpg
....if nothing else I was able to mine out some image detail from both
the highlights and the shadows.

That is one screwed up photo.

I like Timo's idea of using RAW.
Thanks,

That is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. I have no
idea how you did that. Now I wish I could retract my submission.
Nice job,

If it was raw, it would not be much of a challenge.

I still think you did a great job but it is slightly less amazing
knowing that you used the actual image rather than the thumbnail like
I did. I thought you had magically added new pixels.

| I appreciate the responses - some of you are very good at this! As time
permits, I will add them to the gallery itself. If possible, please upload
your images to the gallery, or email the results to me along with your
descriptions, and I'll add them.
The suggestion of including a raw image is a good one - perhaps for a future
challenge.

I've uploaded some of your images to the site and added your names to them.
Several of you, not just Ron, latched on to the rather small version of the
image. If you click an extra time you'll get a larger version of the image
that is 1K high.

I can't say I actually remember as I tend to 'play it by eye' with each
image. When I did what, I'm not sure. BTW, I'm working in PS 6.0.1.
I know I used color range to select the highlights, feather, and applied
some mutiply, color burn tool and so forth to offset the effects of any
overall lightening I would do. (I should have paid more attention to those
lights areas, but just didn't take the time.) Think I reversed the highlight
selection and did a light color fill set to color dodge. Somewhere in there
I used Levels and Hue and Saturation. My apologies to Mike, but I've never
been able to successfully use Curves. Fortunately, in Photoshop there's a
hundred different ways to accomplish the same task:)
Let's see... I used the Dodge, Burn and Desaturate tools in areas. I was too
annoyed by some of the jpeg artifacts, so at some point I turned off
resampling and lowered to 72ppi, added a touch of noise, gaussian blur, then
brought it back up to 300ppi and unsharpened. I felt the top (background)
was too sharp so I used a large History Brush at 60% to soften that area. I
tend to like using tools, though I used them a little sloppily here. I used
the brush in areas to adjust color, hue, saturation.
I'm still not comfortable with digital photos. I also broke away from my
usual way of doing things in that I stayed in RGB mode. Normally I do few
adjustments, if any, before I go into CMYK mode. Hard to tell with this
photo whether some spots/colors belonged or not. I know I left some of that
red too bright for being in shadow. Lots of spots I just didn't attend too,
but I was about to prepare supper. I'd normally, time permitting, pay a lot
more attention to the details. Still, it was fun since I haven't done it in
a while, and since I wasn't on a 10 minute deadline;)

Nice to hear. Another idea, pleae make it possible to discuss:
1) about each entry, on that very page, below that picture.
2) about each individual challenge, so discussion would be below the
thumbnail page of each challenge.
Now as it is, we can only see what others have done. No discussion, no
questions no answers.

Hi Timo,
I'm open to suggestions, but because I'm using software provided by others,
I'm limited in how much I can change things.
There is the ability to add comments to individual images, once you click on
the image to view the medium sized version, however the design of the page
makes it easy to ignore the comment field, which is at the bottom of the
page. The person adding the image can also provide a title, and an
unlimited amount of text discussing how they modified the image. I'll see
about making this more clear in the instructions.

| Re Timo's suggestions about improving the display of information along with
each challenge image. It turns out there is an option to display the
caption below the thumbnail image. I'll leave it enabled for a bit and you
can see if you like it better:

Mike, my suggestion was to add the possibility to discuss about the
entries, so that the readers could exchange opinions and ask & answer
questions.

Not good, really, the page layout is now totally messed up.

Yes, this would be a great idea. As it is, the gallery software only
supports individual comments, which are less convenient than what you are
suggesting. I'm not in a position to add that right now.

LOL - well there you have it! I thought it was kind of cool looking myself.
