Author weird problem with photoshop

I'm running photoshop7.1 on windows XP home edition. I have had problems
with photoshop crashing on opening. I have cleaned the hard drive, run the
scan disk, defragmented the drive. Reloaded Photoshop (clean installs)
several times and it _still_ crashes on start up. There is no problem
loading Image Ready but it won't jump to photoshop from there. What next??

Watch the Photoshop splash screen carefully when you launch Photoshop.
It will show you what it's doing--"Loading Preferences," "Reading
fonts," "Measuring memory," and so on.

If it crashes on "Loading Preferences," you have corrupt Preferences
files. Since reloading Photoshop keeps the old prefs files, reloading
Photoshop will not fix this problem--you need to manually delete your
prefs files.

If it crashes on "Reading fonts" or "Initializing CoolType engine," you
have a corrupt or damaged font installed on your computer. Corrupt fonts
are a very common cause of Photoshop crashes.

If it crashes on "Measuring memory," the most likely explanation is
defective or marginal RAM installed in your computer.

BINGO <sigh> thank you! My brain had reached an extreme yesterday and I
couldn't for the life of me think of what was going on. I know that I've
been pushing the limits on the RAM on this thing and had spent quite a bit
of time saving stuff out to CD to free up some space on here. I had plenty
of room when I was done and it was still doing the same thing and I had
tried deleting the prefs yesterday but that hadn't worked. Today, it has and
I'm back on track again :)

Thanks!

I'm glad it's working, but you are confusing RAM with Hard Drive space.
