Author Vector Drawing Question

Newbie to vector art, using CS2.

I want to draw a "V" shape-- just two intersecting black lines.

I can accomplish this by making TWO single-line shapes, and manually
aligning them so that they intersect. But I'd rather just draw a
single shape that has three points.

When I use the pen tool, click in 3 different corner points, and turn
on stroking-- I don't get a V shape, I get a downward pointing
triangle. The program automatically fills in the third side of the
triangle.

How to I turn this off? Should I not even be using shapes at all?
