I reently needed to crop an image to an exact square. Is there a way of
counting the pixels as you crop so that you can be sure that you are x
pixels wide by y pixels high?

If you only need to be sure it's a square, hold down the shift key while
you make the selection. If you need it to be exactly xxx pixels, fill
this number in in the crop tool settings.
