Should I resize first or last? - (Updated)

I am working with 23mb images that ultimately need to be increased to
50mb using PS bicubic. I am adding new layers like replacement skies
and flowers etc. and I need really good convincing edges. My query is,
for the best possible result, should I make my additions and changes at
the 23mb stage, or increase to 50mb and then make my changes there?

I guess the wise thing to do is take 3 images and work on them both
ways and see if resizing later makes a difference or not. This will
probably tell you more than the contradictory info you're likely to get
off usenet. For sure things will run a bit faster if you do all the
scut work on the smaller file.

My guess is you're better off getting everything in at 23 MB and
resampling, but it's just a guess ... I often resample up for printing
as the last step before sharpening but not with "replacement skies"
etc, so I'm not sure about your case.

Hi again.

Like Bill, I have no idea which would be the best order.

However I would suggest that you do your resampling in 10% steps, and use
bicubic smoother, if on CS2.

23 to 50 is still a bit larger than I would try, and expect good results,
but if you must, then you must.

I would have done the alterations on the smaller image
and only the sharpening on the final product.

Personally, I'd do the resize first, so I could better judge how the quality
of the final might degrade.

As Bill Hilton suggested, doing it both ways would be the best way to
determine which is actually "better." Also, as others have pointed out,
Sharpen should come last. I will often run Neat Image (or similar), then
Sharpen as last. If I have to do color space conversion, i.e. RGB -> CMYK,
I'll do that before Sharpen. Do not know if Neat Image is "better" before, or
after the color space conversion.
