Author Layer? Merge? Combine? Not sure

I am rather new to PS, and really don't utilize it's full
potential..basically just tweaking photos and cropping, but a few
months ago I had to take one image and copy on top of another image
while having the image being copied on top to lose some of its opacity
to blend in better with the underlying image. It worked beautifully.
I found a tutorial for this somewhere on the web and stupidly forgo to
bookmark it.

Now I need to use this same effect again and can't find this tutorial
:( I remember creating a new layer, something about a shift key, and
I think using the gradient tool. Does this remotely make sense? What
I have is a 800x60 solid blue rectangle that I need to paste into a
600 x 60 image which I would like to fade into the background.

Can somebody point me in the right direction for a tutorial. I
realize that I have not made myself too clear, but I don't really know
all the terminology..hence I can't even find anything via Google after
2 hours.

Thanks for any help

You might want to go to www.myjanee.com and look at the titles of the
tutorials there. If the one you seek is not there, I'll bet that they have one
that will stand in.

Sorry, I forgot to add that you want tutorials on Layers, Layer Masks and
Blurring of Layer Masks.

If you cannot find what you need, we'll try and step you through the process,
so don't feel abandoned.

Thanks, looks like a wealth of information here.
