Author RAW files as smart objects in CS2, as good as it seems?

Hi all,

Just wanted to get some feedback regarding putting camera RAW files as
a smart object layer in CS2. Assuming you want to use ACR to convert
RAW files, it seems this is a great solution for the following reasons:

1. Easy to change RAW conversion paramerters
2. You can crop image but in fact retain the entire image in the
smart object RAW layer.
3. You can reduce psd file size by saving the psd as an 8 bit
(vs. 16 bit image). Since the RAW file is typically not all that big,
the psd file is smaller than if you were working off a 'TIFF' or
traditional bitmap layer in which case you would have to save the psd
in 16 bit mode to retain the 16 bit data. With the RAW file embedded as
a smart object, you can save the PSD in 8 bit mode. When ready to print
or whatever, you convert the file back to 16 bit. Since the original
RAW file is there as a smart object, you are back to a full 16 bit
image even though it was save in an '8 bit' PSD file!

Does anyone know of any pitfalls to this technique? Also, does anyone
know if the RAW conversion parameters are also embedded somewhere in
the PSD file? and the implications if there is an external sidecar XMP
file?
