PS files won't defrag

| Setup: PS CS on WinXP with two 80GB hds. C drive has OS and apps, and D
drive has only PS files (many over one GB in size) and scratch space.
After D drive is 95% full, many files are deleted to free up 20% space,
i.e. 20 GB. After defragging, many files remain seriously defragged. Why
and how can this be fixed? Thanks.

| I assume you mean "many file remain seriously UNdefragged"
Could be other programs are interfering with the process e.g. virus
checkers.
Try running defrag in Safe Mode
Could be a disc fault . Try a google for chkdsk and scannow
