Our company gets faxes (in TIF format) that we need to add
information to, and then refax to another office. When we load
these files in PS CS we get a message saying pixel aspect ratio
is only for preview, and directing us to turn it off for best image
quality. We click OK, the image comes up and looks perfect.

But when we try and follow this direction by switching to Square
ratio (we assume this is the equivalent of turning it off? -- There
*is* no 'disable' option), the image immediately gets squashed
vertically to half its proper size. Then we have to manually
resize the image and redouble its vertical dimension.

What a pain in the XXX. Is there any way of forcing CS to
handle these files properly? We don't have this problem with
any other editor.
