How to scan 16 bit in CS?

| I have a CanonScan Lide 35 scanner that has 48/16 bit scanning
capability. When I scan in PhotoShop CS through "Import/CanoScan Lide
35" I turn on "Enable 48/16 bit scanning" in the Twain dialog box that
pops up, but the scanned image in in 8 bit mode. Google search
mentions something about "scanner plugin" but I cannot find any
download either in Adobe or Canon websites for it.
What is process of scanning in 16 bit?
Thanks in advance.

Does the scanner driver scan directly into PS or does it save
to a disk file first? With my Umax scanner, if "scan to file" is
selected in the driver it saves in 8-bit format, otherwise it
goes as 16-bit directly into PS.
If nothing else works you might try using Silverfast instead of
the stock scanner driver.

Try scanning stand-alone, ie, with the scanner software instead of
through Photoshop via Twain. You should be able to scan the files as
16 bit and then open later in Photoshop. Actually, you *should* be
able to scan directly in 16 bit mode (every scanner I've ever used
could do this) so there's probably some bug in the Canon software which
you should look into, but scanning stand-alone should let you get 16
bit scans for now.

| It is also possible that the scanner doesn't output at 16-bit. By turning on
the option in your scanner software the scanner is scanning at 16-bit and
then when it gets moved over to Photoshop it is only sending the best 8-bit.
This was quite popular with early scanners and cheaper scanners. You will
still get better pictures you just won't get the 16-bit data to play with in
Photoshop. HP scanners used to do this for many years. If you still have the
user's guide for the scanner look up that feature and see if it explains
exactly what that does when you enable it.
