| I'm having a little trouble grasping the concepts of using channels
and transparencies, and am looking for some tutorials to "clear"
things up for me, if anyone knows of any.

Rather than a tutorial I suggest a book, Channel Chops by Biedny, Monroy
and Moody. This will explain what you want and more. It will help you
really understand Photoshop.
