| After searching for « edge effects » in the archive of this group I found an
interesting message talking about the Background Eraser tool of PSP. I tried
it and got the « Web-safe 256 Vs. True colors (Spiky twirl small background
eraser).png » image. The result is kind of cool but there are not so many
brushes and you can't reproduce edge effects like fading or torning.
But it's a good thing to know, the Background Eraser exists :).

Psp can do a lot although the term Edge effects could lead you up the wrong
Path. Drop shadow and button bevels ect can be found under effects 3D
effects Lots of photo edges where the image fades at its edges can be found
as masks and some also in the image add picture frame.
As you have the demo a lot of the extra recourse where left out to keep
download times down. you can get them here
http://www.jasc.com/support/custome...9components.asp
Psp has an effects browser so you can cycle thought all its effects if you
have a afternoon free <g>
Even more can be done with a few scripts many available for free or created
your self Such as deckle edge's torn edges that look torn burnt edges which
are simpler to torn but with more colour. Often done by running a brush
around the edge, with the help of psp's brush variances these can be made
to look more naturally varied.
http://www.psplinks.com/ a small list of links to how to's and more.
Trialling PSP is just the start to opening a whole world of nothing is
imposable I will find a way.

For those who have Photoshop....
From the July/August 2004 Photoshop User Magazine (100 Hot Tips), this one
by Todd Morrison, page 36:
"Open an image, double-click on the Background layer, and press OK to change
its name to Layer 0. Use the Rectangular Marquee tool to make a selection
just inside the edge of your image. Now enter Quick Mask mode (Q). Go to
Filter > Brush Strokes > Spatter and in the dialog, set radius to 25,
Smoothness to 5, and then click OK. Press Q to exit Quick Mask. Now, click
on the Add Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers palette to create
your edge effect."
