Computer Graphics with Photoshop - Layers, masks...????

OK, Perhaps one of you Photoshopers can help me. I have PS v7 (for
the MAC). I need to do something with some images that I think PS
should be able to handle.

I have a graphic image that has three separate areas of pure white. I
have this image in giff, fpg & eps formats, and I'm sure I could save
it in others if need be. I also have another image file of a
photograph in tiff format. Here is what I need to do with them.

I want to superimpose the graphic image over the photo, but I need to
treat 3 separate white areas on the graphic image in different ways.
The first white area needs to be transparent so that the phote shows
through. The second white area can stay white. The third and final
area needs to make the photo transparent where it overlays so that the
media which it is printed on shows through. It is the last white area
that seems to present the biggest problem. One last thing. I hope
that there is an easy enough solution to this, so that I can do it
over and over multiple times with different photos.

Open the four neccessarry files. Select all on the first "white area"
image. Copy (command [apple]-c). Select the image that will be used for
background. Paste (command-p, aka apple-p). Select the white area of
this new layer and delete it or use a layer mask. Select second "white
area" image. Copy and paste into the "background image" document. Since
you don't mind having white on this layer, leave it. Finally take the
last "white area" image, copy and paste into "background image"
document. Adjust transparancy of this new layer according to your
desire. If you just want the third "white area" to be completely
transparent, select it and delete or again use a layer mask.

Select and make a Layer Mask on top image here. Or delete the area but I
prefer to use Layer Masks when possible.

The second white area can stay white.

Leave it alone. The paper will show through when you print. Is that what
you want? Most printers cannot print white.

Shows through both images, right? So it would be the same as above.

White is transparent for most printers so you need to have that area
filled with white on the final file.

If you want this for something other than printing make a Layer Mask for
the same area on both layers and save as psd or transparent tiff. This
is what I would normally do anyway, then make a second flattened file
for final output.

Are you using a page layout program? How you handle files can vary
according to program.

Whether this can be done in Batch depends on what the graphic image is.
Will it be the same in every case? Will sizes/resolution vary from photo
to photo. Need more info.
