When I start Photoshop CS my firewall program alerts me that CS is
trying to access the internet.
Why?

Hi, my firewall never complains about Photoshop CS (PhotoImpact is
more talkative, according to my firewall). I don't see any Photoshop
setting that should enable PS to connect online. But if your version
hasn't been activated yet, then i don't know.

Might it be checking for updates? My Acrobat SW does this, but not
every time it is launched. My Epson printer driver SW also does this
when I power on the printer.

It would not appear an essential step, since program launches whether
connected or not.

My copy of CS only did this once, at activation. After the activation
completed I turned off access so I'd know if it asked again and it has not
asked a second time. Have you activated yet?

I have the same thing going on, starting CS (activated some time ago) will
trigger an access to my ISP's DNS IP. Blocking that attempt in the firewall
doesn't impact the functionality of CS, but it might prohibit the check for
updates. Have to check if that works when updates are published.
