| Unfortunately people believe they are saving money by using an employee,
they don't think about the consequences of the poor design.

There are numerous books and websites that will help you learn these
software packages. The "Classroom in a Book" series are most commonly
recommended and will get you off to an excellent start.
But bear two things in mind: First, a person can expect to spend 3 months
becoming reasonably proficient in just *one* of these packages, let alone
the full suite you mention. Second, technical proficiency with the software
does not equal design talent. There are already a lot of people out there
using high-end Adobe software to crank out some truly brutal design. Please
don't become one of them - learn at least the basics of good design.

of PS tutorials. The best videos are from digitalmastery.com
Photoshop is a professional raster image creation/editing
application. Do your montages here
Illustrator is a professional vector illustration program
Do your logos here
In Design is a layout program, Combine images and text to
create ads, brochures, etc, here.
Go Live thinks it's a web editor, but it sucks. The CD
makes a nice coaster, or I've seen them cut into
pretty shapes and hung on Christmas trees. If you
want a WYSIWYG web tool, buy Dreamweaver like
everyone else.
Work with this stuff for 5 or 6 years and you'll
have begun to scratch the surface of what they can do.
If you get frustrated and want to sell your In Design or
Illustrator license, contact me. If it's a valid license
with an Adobe transfer of ownership, I know someone
who may be interested.

Hi Simon, check out the address on my sig.
They have a substantial collection of adobe training material in the form of
video tutorials that stream over any Internet connection. I've worked with
some of the co-authors of these products in the past and can attest to their
quality; especially for those who are just getting started.

No offense to you Simon, but tell your boss to hire a design firm.
Why is it that someone with no idea about surgery could never pass
themselves off as a surgeon, but people with absolutely no
qualifications for design, or print, or prepress, or any of the other
technical aspects of the industry either a.) claim to be designers and
are accepted as such, or b.) expected by their company to perform the
duties of a designer instead of hiring a professional?
It makes absolutely no sense to me, from either a design or a business
perspective. I would NEVER say to an otherwise unqualified employee,
"here, I bought you 'some graphics software' - learn how to use it and
then create all of our marketing and advertising materials."

| i find it strange that youre willing to pay top dollar for adobe products

hahaha this "jjs" (is it "S" stands for "Sniffing"?) keeps sticking
his nose to sniff fishy <g>.
Now I wonder if his mother smelled when she said she *gave* birth to
"jjs" <bg>.

It depends on your approach on how you want to learn the software. A
really, really good book I would suggest (its just mass of tutorials,
starts w/ the easy and graduates to harder effects) is 'Down and Dirty
Tricks With Photoshop 7'. It is a hands-on approach as compared to
most other books, which are more theory oriented.
