Water Color and Oil Painting?
|
|
| Diogenes' Daughter 2005-06-27, 4:17 am |
| Hi!
I'm new here, but have been using Corel PP9 and Draw9 for some time now.
Unfortunately, I have never been able to figure out a good way to make
photographs look like either watercolor or oil paintings. I have tried the
watercolor effect, the alchemy effect and just about everything else that I
can think of, but the end result usually looks like something (perhaps an
artist!) exploded on the canvas!
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Diogenes' daughter was called "Areia" wasn't she?
It's no use just choosing your effect and slapping it on. There are degrees
of effect and all the controls are there in the various dialogue boxes for
the different filters. You can also vary the effect by changing the size of
the image you are processing, and also you can copy the image to several
channels of different colour and apply the effects separately to them before
recombining them.
You might enjoy doing a Google for .8bf filters downloading the free ones
and installing them (look in your "Help" file for how to do this). They will
open the door to many many different effects, and you can use more than one
filter on an image.
There is a proprietary (and very expensive) filter you can buy which does a
creditable job of making a photo look like an oil painting...but it's the
journey that matters, not the image, just another tawdry possession.
Diogenes, that old Cynic, would agree.

She's my older sister. :OD
Actually, I didn't know that he had a daughter (except for me that is!).
Isn't Areia another name for Athena?

I have tried every setting in every dialog box of every effect that PP9 has
probably more than once! :Op I must admit that I get a bit frustrated when
an effect is called "Water Color" when the best it has to offer is something
that looks like the inside of a microwave over after one's dinner has
exploded!!! :OD Why don't they just call it the "Splattered Lasagna Effect"
or the "Never Put An Egg In The Microwave Effect"? :OD

I sort of tried a similer thingy with the "Edge Detect Effect" which I
modified and layered on top of the photo. It only kind of worked. I'll
give the size change and several channels ideas a try and see what happens.

I'm kind of a self-taught Corel user (actually a stained glass artist that
plays around with PP9 and Draw 9) and I'm always happy to try something new.
I'll do a search and see what's out there. Keep your fingers crossed! :O)

Yikes! Expensive! :O(

Oh how right you are, but speaking of tawdry possessions, do you think that
I should upgrade to PP/Draw 12?

True! After all, he did smash his bowl when he saw another man drinking
with his hands, but I'm not going to smash my computer just 'coz I see
someone using a pencil! :OD

Oh! You may be the very chap I'm looking for! Our local police are looking
for a stained glass artist to produce a 15 feet high by 26 feet wide glass
mural portraying several openly homosexual policewomen victimizing a gay
man. I'll mention your name next time I pass.
Pip pip!

| Hi Lianna,
I got into "Paintography" a couple of years ago using the tools available
in Picture Publisher 10 Professional, and so far I am pretty happy with
the results. There is one plug-in tool in particular in PP10PRO called
"Paint Studio" that gives you tremendous flexibility for converting your
photos into digital "paintings". I have tested this plug-in with PPaint9,
and I have encountered no problems with it so far.
This plug-in seems to work better with landscapes than with people
photos... But then, I'm more into landscapes so I haven't really played
with it much on people photos. Also, while Paint Studio does have a
large number of preset effects, the interface is set up so that you
can adjust all of the 16 settings for the presets to customize them to
your liking, and then you can save these as new presets.
If you would like to see some samples of the artwork I have created with
Paint Studio, please visit my website ( http://www.trgtc.net ) and click on
the "Original Artwork" link (the image on the top page of my website
was also done using this plug-in).
Picture Publisher 10 Pro shows up from time to time on eBay, but it's
fairly expensive at $200 - $300 for a copy.
My Hidden Tools update ($84.95) for Picture Publisher 10 DCE and
Corel Photobook, includes the Picture Publisher 10 Pro 30 Day Demo
which has the Paint Studio plug-in.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Best Regards,
Jon Olson

If you see something you like, then someone else besides
StarvingArtistTheUsenetSpammerMike probably created it.

| Besides, I don't want to pay someone to do it. I want to learn/figure out
how to do it myself! :O)
