Author Word count in a form field

I've been to lots of sites where a certain text field is limited to a
certain number of words (or characters). As you type, it counts down
visibly so you can track what you enter.

How is that done? What I specifically need is to count the total number of
words entered into a field so that a total per-word charge can be calculated
based on the information.

TIA,

Mary
