High-end super reliable hosting needed! Please suggest
|
|
|
| Hi all,
I'm shopping for a very robust and reliable hosting where I can host my
WordPress video blog. Since this blog will be critical to my business, I
actually really need reliability, robustness and prompt support before
anything else. So I'm not even considering hosts that for 6$/month give you
500GB of space, 300GB of bandwidth etc...
I now such great hosts for the Win/ASP.NET platform, but since I'm going to
use WordPress (PHP) many suggested that I go for a Linux-based hosting...and
I know one in this category.
So, if you could reccomend a few GREAT hosts (hosts where you'd put your
high-traffic e-commerce site, for example), that would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
- Marco

My moderate traffic e-commerce site is at ServInt.

they seem to provide only VPS and dedicated servers though, while I'd prefer
a completely managed space...I don't want to deal with software installation
and configuration, patches and that kind of stuff. Just a strong and
reliable shared hosting...

Scott,
I can understand where Marco is coming from. ServInt does not have the
same level of management as if you're using a shared hosting company.
The webmaster is responsible for much more, and many people are not
comfortable with that level of support.

Maybe I take a more hands-on approach to my site than most site owners.
I don't even notice the difference in level of support between my old
shared host and ServInt. But I do understand that as a rule, you will
get less support with a VPS than you will with shared hosting. The
reason I chose ServInt is that they offer more support than other VPS hosts.
Marco wants to know where I would put a high-traffic e-commerce site. I
wouldn't put a high traffic site on a shared host. I learned that lesson
when my moderately-high traffic site crashed the mysql server at a
shared host when I had too many concurrent connections.
If Marco can give us a better idea what kind of traffic he is talking
about, we can help him better. His idea of high traffic may not be the
same as my idea of high traffic.

Scott,
I'm not saying I'd put a high traffic site on a shared host, either.
However, Marco has already indicated he's not interested in a vps or
dedicated server. That's his choice, and I think it would be better to
recommend someone who might work for him, not keep telling him he needs
a vps. It is his site, after all. And he's the one who has to maintain it.
But you're also correct - to some, 1K hits per day is "high traffic",
while to others 1M hits/day is a "slow day".

thanks for your replies. Let me add in some more info:
the site I will host is a video blog...i.e. a blog with a video (of 5-10
minutes) in each post. There will be quite a lot of posts, and quite a lot
of visits. Given the type of content, I expect the site to generate a lot of
traffic, and consume a lot of bandwidth. And I don't want all this load to
slow down the site too much, or generate load errors. I won't however be
using mysql or others apps for custom-made scripts (MySql is however used by
WordPress).
I am very experienced with ASP.NET and Win-based environments, but I know
almost nothing about PHP and Linux, that's why I don't want a VPS plan where
I may be required to do more than just uploading files via FTP. A shared
hosting is good for that reason: semplicity. I just need a hosting that
guarantees a good bandwidth, server reliability, and a knowledgable and
prompt support in case I need it (24x24x7)
Thanks again to everyone.

Some time ago someone here recommended Lightning Servers. I don't have
any personal experience hosting with them, but they may be worth
checking out.
You will want to tell your prospective host what you plan to do and what
your estimated disk space and band width requirements are. Your host
will not want you slowing things down or generating errors. A good host
will either work with you to get the resources that you need or tell you
up front that they can't host you.
The thing you don't want to do is get yourself a hosting account, set up
your domain, then lose your account for eating up too many resources.

All I can think of is 24 hours a day, 24 weeks of the year, 7 days a
week.

sorry, I meant 24x7x365...it was just too tired to think, I guess :-)

thanks, this is a good suggestion, I will do this way.
However I still need some hosts to write to :-)

Ah. Not noticing where you are, I suppose those (24x24x7) could also
have been an expression of metric time measurements. :)
