| I'm putting together a small community website - for a few friends and
family.
Anyone able to recommend a good free (or very cheap) community type script?
(php based)
Thanks.

What is a "community type script"?
First you need to further define just what you want on your site. Only
then should you start to think about how to do it.

No, but you haven't even decided what you want on your site yet, either.
I'm not saying you have to plan the pages, code the site and everything
else. But you need to have some idea what you want on it.
Do you want memberships? A forum? A calendar? Places of interest?
Homes for sale? Recipes?
Figure out what you want. Then go looking for it!

No, but you do at least need to explain what you do want. What do you
mean by a "community type script"? That's not a phrase I've
encountered before.
Maybe you could give some examples of other websites that do similar
things to what you're doing - that way, we can give some advice on how
to achieve the same thing.

Exactly.
"rocket to go to the moon" is a clear defined goal.
"community type script" is very vague.
Do you want... A forum? A mailing list? Somewhere people can upload
files (of what types)? Blogs? Chat?
Communities come in many different forms. There's no such thing as a
generic community script.

without knowing exactly what you need, you could try something like
Joomla. comes with a lot of modules and is easy to install.
