Author Hosting - again

Hi, all,

I've been approached by a non-profit to recommend hosting. And quite
frankly, I'm not sure where to go on this one.

They're requirements are modest - 200MB disk space and 1GB/mo. bandwidth
are more than enough for what they have. More would be OK - they want
the ability to expand.

They also need a small number of email lists (double opt-in with
moderation option) and the usual PHP, mysql (small database), etc.

The only other thing I might have problems with is they need secure
protocol, so they need an SSL certificate. It could be shared, as long
as it is recognized by browsers.

I do see beachcomber.net has the option to purchase an InstantSSL
certificate. But I'm not sure if that is recognized by browsers as well
as Thawte, etc.

As always, price is a concern. But they're not looking for $0.99/mo.
hosting. Reliability is more important, and they understand they need
to pay a reasonable price for that reliability.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jerry,

I thought you were a PowerVPS customer? Why not give them a little account
on your VPS?

I would, except that I'm on the BOD of the organization, and the bylaws
state no board member can accept compensation for any reason other than
reimbursement for direct out-of-pocket costs. And I'm not going to give
it away.

Basically, I host those I'm webmaster for and include it in my fee. And
they have their own webmaster (who is not a board member and therefore
can be paid).

Oh, and PowerVPS isn't the only VPS I have. It's just the only Windows
one. :-)

So then sell them a portion at cost.

That's not considered out-of-pocket expenses by this or any other
organization I'm aware of. Out-of-pocket expenses are things I have to
pay for the organization - like postage if I mail something for the chapter.

Jerry,
What do they need the secure mode for? Transactions? Or secure newgroups?
etc. If it is for a secure transaction you could use one of the paypal-type
systems and no SSL that your paying for at all.

Secure payments, among other things. The gateway is a little different
- it's accessed by CURL. Also, at customer request, they will keep
encrypted CC info for repeat payments.

Plus since they have personal information on the site, they want access
passwords to be encrypted, also.
