I came across a few sites that review a lot of web hosting
services.... can someone give me a pointer?

Check the links. It could be an affiliate thing designed to make the site
owner money...
If that is the case one has to wonder how 'honest' the reviews are.

Best you can do if you are looking for hosting is ask others who they
like...
You could ask by making a post to the group.

My two cents on a good host at the moment:
http://beachcomber.net/

They have been great for me for nearly a year.

Don't trust them. Many of them are paid for by the hosts that are reviewed.

Tell us your requirements. Ask at webhostingtalk.com. Google any host
you are considering and look for complaints. (Remember that any host can
have a bad customer. That doesn't make them a bad host.)

The best host for me may not be the best host for you. We can all tell
you who we host with, but that won't mean that you should use the same
host one of us does.

mostly there is a catch on free hosts. some try to put a small link back or a google ad on your website. still there are few quality web hosts around.

i have used www.graffiti.net (banner free sub domain) for more than a year. unfortunately they do not support top level domains.
