Reasonable rates for bandwidth.

| My term with my hosting company expires in April. I have a colocated
server (which I own). I use about 150-200 GB per month. I want to have
a straightforward deal where I pay some $$ per gig, perhaps with some
extra monthly fee (for power and space) and that's all.
What would be a reasonable rate in terms of dollars per gigabyte, that
I could reasonably expect to get. Thanks.

I could tell you what I'm paying, but without knowing what you're paying I
can't judge if you would find it reasonable or not.

I thought that I asked a simple question.
I am paying $1.50 per gig if I divide what I pay per month, by the
estimate of gigs per month.
Is there anyone who hosts high traffic websites?

You must have a lot of big files on your server or one hell of a lot of
visitors to use 150-200 gig per month we get 6 to 7K visitors a day and
only use 15 to 20 Gig a month
200 gig a month in the UK would be very expensive

I'm paying $2.00 per gig, but I'm not doing anything like that kind of
bandwidth.

I have a site algebra.com that generates a lot of formula and graph
images.
My question still stands. How much to pay per gig.

Is that per month for BW? So, if you have 50Gs of BW you pay $100 a month?

where is the colo?
the available trunks there will be who you should be checking with to
get rates.
could be anywhere from 35cents to a buck and more.

not sure about Zezan but IH has a few providers.
if they're set multihoned, you may have to buy from them, the
middleman, or maybe they'll let you fight it out with SBC or AT&T, but
be careful with AboveNet.

Yes. I'm guessing that if I were doing 300 GB per month, I could get that
down to somewhere in the $1.50 range.

I did about 240 gigs last month. That's what I found out a few minutes
ago. I am hoping to find a deal better than $1.50 per gig!!!

I have cheaper hosting than that, but I am afraid I can not offer you that
amount of BW ATM as I am to full with my own sites, I need to get to a
dedicated server. At any rate Hostgator offers reasonable rates!

| They are offering what would approximately amount to a dollar per gig
(they want to do it on a 95th percentile of mbps). That's better than
what I had.

still, at those rates
you could lease a bigun at a multihoned dc and get about 1 to 1.5TB a
month for a lot less.
a lot.
P4's are now going at about 60 to 100 monthly with 2-300gigs of
storage and around 1.5TB's of transfer.

Co-location isn't shared hosting. A co-location facility can't sign up
10,000 people and have them put in their gear, expecting to make up the
cost on people who aren't actually using the service.
I can drive to the facility. I can take my equipment in and out 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week. I know that no matter what time of day, I can call
and get the Network Operations Center on the line. A live (English
speaking) body will answer the phone and be genuinely helpful.
Service is worth what you pay for. I'm running an ASP business on our
servers, and while I won't say what we're making per month, it's enough
that a few bucks on bandwidth isn't a concern. I spend more on Google ads
in one week then we do for hosting our servers.
Face it. About 1/3rd of the messages in this group are people looking for
the cheapest possible hosting, while another 1/3rd are people who posted
the previous month complaining about how bad the service is. If some of
the people in this group actually thought about what poor quality hosting
service actually cost them, they'd stop buying the cheapest, and start
paying for quality service.
Look at the guy from Madagascar. He's signed up with some
discount hosting company. The instant he starts to use significant
bandwidth, his account is canceled for abuse. Massive bandwidth
allocations are just a lie, and if you start using more bandwidth then
you're really paying for, then the vendor is going to find some way to
terminate your account.

You are referring to my posting regarding Hostgator right? How does $14.95 a
month for 2000GB BW add up to a $1 per gig? Or are you needing a dedicated
or semi dedicated server?

I am referring to my ISP. Yes, I need a dedicated server (running
Linux). No ifs or buts.

Admittedly it was based on 2 separate packages each with 100GB traffic /
month, but I'm sure they would be able to sort something out now they
are selling such packages. They must have access to the bandwidth you
are talking about to be able to offer it for re-sale.
I originally used to deal with Doug when we first started, But Alison
has been sorting me out during the recent move of servers.
I have been with them since we started back in 1999 so they have been
around a good while.
Hope they can help.
