Hey Duende. How are you doing?
Southern California is mostly desert and almost always a tinderbox. It's
not unusual to go six months or more without any rain. Then when we do
get some rain we often get a lot and it comes all at once, so that there
is flooding. The big rains cause the chaparral to grow back very thick
and then it dries out.

I'm in north coastal OC. It's ok around here but north of LA and Malibu is
burning big time and spreading fast. Castaic had winds of 108 mph pushing
fires.
I heard there was a fire down your way that invoved a death.

There are also two fires East of San Diego that are being pushed west by
Santa Anna winds. We don't have current info on the exact location of
the fires, but from what I understand one is northeast and the other is
southeast. Latest reports have them pretty far away, but the smell of
smoke is very heavy right now where I live (about 3 miles from the
beach) and there is some ash falling. I expect it will get much worse
before the fires are contained.
The last time this happened, the fire got within about 5 miles from
where I live and the falling ash was so bad we had to wear masks outside
for a couple of weeks afterwards. It was like a nuclear winter.

Sandstorms are a risk into next week here. The High Desert is always at
risk of high winds anyhow, both the Antelope and Victor valleys, since we're
in a bowl formed by the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountain ranges.
Castaic is up on the other side of the mountains too, and is always at just
as much risk for high winds.

Yes it is very bad. There are now 7 separate fires burning in San Diego.
Officials are predicting that this will be worse than the fires we had
in 2003.

I closed up the house to keep the dust out yesterday shortly after my
last post here. Now we're wearing masks whenever we go outside. I can
see a lot of particulate matter in the air now, but by tomorrow the ash
will be falling like a snow storm.

I'm in Palos Verdes, on the exposed side of the hill (not the ocean side)
and the sky is nothing but a huge cloud of smoke. I have a very light layer
of ash on everything, and my lungs are congested. All windows are now
closed. I don't know if the smoke is from Malibu to my north, or from Irvine
or San Diego to my south. According to the weather forecast, we're in for a
lousy week of smoke, high (60mph) winds, and 95° temperatures.

Which part? On his way to our big client near MCAS Miramar, my boss got
detoured onto I-5 because of a big fire in Rancho Bernardo, and another
client in Escondido is out-of-office today due to fire hazards.

LOL! Many, many moons ago here in AWW there was a lengthy
'chicken&egg' debate on becoming what you were known as. It was
probably a little above your head, so I'll forgive you for not
remembering it. For my part, I dont believe that anyone who publishes

Point "A" is where I live and "B" is where the 2003 fire was finally
stopped. Officials are predicting that this will be worse than the 2003
fire.
In San Diego County there are greenbelts running through canyons that go
all the way from the backcounty to where I live, and further west almost
all the way to the beach. My home is on the edge of one of those
canyons.
These fires are all out of control and will not be controlled till
sometime after the Santa Ana winds die down. They're not expecting that
to happen till Wednesday.
For those who don't know, Santa Ana winds are very hot and strong winds
that come from the desert. Usually the wind comes from the ocean and it
keeps the coastal areas cool, but when the wind changes direction it
gets very warm here. Adding very hot and strong winds to a fire causes a
firestorm that moves very quickly.

I'll keep you posted.
You can see what I'm seeing from my back yard by accessing my "pan and
tilt" web cam. Go here for instructions on how to use it:
http://www.yard-cam.com/
The preset "mtn" is a view towards the direction of the fire danger, so
when it gets a little closer you should be able to see it.
It's hard to see the ash falling right now during the daytime, but it
should be a lot more noticable later. The fountain is illuminated until
about 11 PM local time, and the light makes the ash show up a lot
better.

Touche. ;)
I do remember being seen as... not a pleasant person to deal with, when
I initially jumped into a crossposted thread from news.admin.net-abuse.
email - and there are a lot of extreme opinions in that newsgroup, so I
fully understood why the heated debate was taking place.
But the person I was arguing with most often (Charles Sweeney), is now
one of the AWW'ers I respect most. Rather ironic, huh...
During that debate, although a lot of crap was being slung on both sides,
I found that there were a lot of points I actually did agree with, and just
because others disagreed with me didn't mean they were jerks. Or stupid,
for that matter. On the contrary, a lot of the regulars here are very sharp.
My opinion of you is formed primarily by your posts in this thread. Besides,
for someone so opposed to the publishing of personal information, you sure
are eager to post the real names of a few people you don't like. I think
that's more than a little bit hypocritical.

I cant be bothered to look, since someone will cry foul anyway, but
it'd be the work of three minutes to come up with a message ID which
showed Kenny publishing my name and the address of a property I own,
BEFORE any post from me with any personal information on him. Not
forgetting that Kenny runs a hate-site where he also publishes the

Essentially.
La Jolla is West of Interstate 5 and University City (where I live) is
between 5 and 805. I'm about a mile East of 5.

Certainly.
I sure hope I don't end up in a shelter somewhere watching my web cam

evacuate I should send them the url.

The camera is an Airlink101 AICAP650W SkyIPCam Wireless Camera
I got it for $211 delivered, but that web site seems to be down now.
It's $220 at:
http://www.genericcomputer.com/shop...sp?itemid=11995
That's a very good price for something like this.
I already had a wireless access point attached to my hub, so initially I
didn't have to spend any more money. Eventually I decided to hard wire
the camera so that it would be 100% reliable. So I spent another $30 on
a good 100' network cable.

Pain in the butt.
I'd love to incorporate this in a web page and have it work in any
browser without the user having to do anything special, but I haven't
figured out how to do that.

Coming home from the elementary school where my wife teaches, this evening
I could see the fires in the San Bernardino Mountains.
Interstate 15 is closed due to fires on that highway in the Cajon Pass and
the fire has crossed the summit into the Victor Valley (Oak Hills, to be
specific.)
We're not in major danger here right now, but we are on alert.

Your fires were the front page story on the Washington Post this

It sounds like it's getting worse instead of better.

Great map!
Hey, you've got several fires closer to you than the ones that are
bearing down on me. <sniff> :-)
These maps will give you a better idea of the "burn areas" and
evacuation areas in San Diego County.
http://www.cbs8.com/misc/fires_oct_07/maps.html
The local paper says that more than 500,000 have been evacuated, but
some are now being allowed to return to their homes.
If you compare the live "Preset 2" shot from my web cam with the "file
photo" on my web page:
http://www.yard-cam.com/webcam2.jpg - especially the view over the
fence.
You can tell exactly how thick the smoke is right now in my area.

How is the wind at your place now? Costa Mesa is rather calm right now.
Put your camera on yur roof. :)
Interesting that in the area just around you that over 250,000 people were
able to be evacuated in less than 24 hours but with days to evacuate New
Orleans with a population of less than 250,000 they just sat there with
their thumbs up their asses.

True, but there are a lot more poor people in New Orleans who don't have

So is PV, but the smoke and ash is something else. It's get to be fun,
though, when the wind whips up the ashes.

I don't need pity. I'm about 20ish miles north of the fireline in the
mountains. (For you non-SoCal residents, that'd be the fires in Lake Arrowhead,
Running Springs and Green Valley.)
I'm safe. But I do thank you for thinking of me!

Thanks. I appreciate your concern.
Here are the details on the camera:
The camera is an Airlink101 AICAP650W SkyIPCam Wireless Camera
I got it for $211 delivered, but the price is now $213 at:
http://www.3gplaza.com/estore/contr...etails?id=56627
It's $220 at:
http://www.genericcomputer.com/shop...sp?itemid=11995
That's a very good price for something like this.
I made my own camera mount out of a couple of blocks of wood and hung it
on the back of my house.
I already had a wireless access point attached to my hub, so initially I
didn't have to spend any more money. Eventually I decided to hard wire
the camera so that it would be 100% reliable. So I spent another $30 on
a good 100' network cable.

Airlink101 has a wired version of this camera that sells for a little
less, and they also sell cams without pan & tilt for less than $100.
Or you can buy a stand-alone security cam system from a place like
Costco, that comes with a monitor and 2-4 cameras. That's what I have on
the front of my house, so I can see both directions on the street as
well as who comes to my front door. I put that system in when my kid was
old enough to play outside by herself, so that I could keep an eye on
her and still get some work done.

Neat, I do like that idea but I like the website link too so I can send it
to my mom and dad
then they can watch what is going on also since they live over 2000 miles
away. =)
I would love to wire it for sound also. I noticed that on your link there is
a sound link
but no sound?
I will look at all those options. This would be very cool. My solution to
the outdoor kid watching
is a laptop though :)
