| Well, I checked out HFAB this weekend for one teeny site that's
literally a couple pages in size, and uses nothing any more
sophisticated than CSS. :) Their online ordering system has been
disabled, and potential customers are advised to click their mailto. I
did, leaving a let-me-know-how-we-do-this request, Monday morning; it's
Tuesday evening, and no word. Apparently despite the recommendations in
here, they're not interested in adding to their user base.

Wait a minute.
Are you saying an AWW darling host has gone sour? That would be
unprecedented! ;-)

It might be like hunting moose to find one though.

The fact that there was no ability to order online would have steered me
away immediately.
Well, actually the fact that it only cost a buck would have kept my away
entirely, but even if I somehow lost my common sense the inability to order
online is as much warning as one needs to stay away.

It put me off just enough that I did some more shopping before returning
and sending the email. It would probably have put me off more if the
outfit had not been recommened from time to time by some of the regulars
here.

They have other plans, the "for a buck" thing is kind of a marketing
thing -- plans *start* at a buck a month, and go up to a buck for
[shorter periods of time]. With only two (I miscounted: make that three
<g> ) pages and no needs for big anything (space, bandwidth, features) it
wouldn't have been a bad match. I ended up slapping that site onto
another plan I already had elsewhere; I originally wanted separate
hosting for it, but ended up not bothering.
I figured the disabled online ordering was prompted by abuse by scammers
or whatever, so that the decision was an attempt at controlling that
rather than evidence of incompetence. I was also in contact around this
time with another host - also recommended in here - who, even though
they have online ordering capability, will not open an account until
after Sales has a phone conversation with them; that, too, was
attributed to security.

Once more: I checked them out because they were recommended by more
than one contributor to this group. And no, I did not get (not even an
email reply) what I was willling to pay for (cheap hosting for a
three-page, maybe 20kb site with hardly any hits). That's the problem:
"cheap" shouldn't equal "nothing".
