Author source for map bitmaps that are in public domain

looking for a source for various map graphics (US, and World), that I
could use on my site, and which are in the public domain (or
purchasable for a reasonable fee). Looking for stuff that would have
major cities identified, and/or sub areas of each state / province /
region. Any suggestions are appreciated in advance.

Wikipedia has a good number of blank maps in SVG format.

I very much like BlankMap-World6.svg as it has id attributes for each
country, making it easy to write a script that selects a country and
colours it a particular colour.
