Author Has anyone used private domains?

I was about to transfer my domain name to a service used by my hosting
provider. Their provder has an add on feature called private domain.
It's $7.95/yr and hides all of your contact info. That's the first
time I've heard of that type of service. Has anyone used this or is it
worth buying?

Thanks,
Brett

I've used it for about 13 months and I swear by it. There are some weirdos
out there, and if they write you after seeing your page, they won't have a
flippin' clue where you are, etc. I've only had one weirdo write me via my
site in ten years, but that is enough for me to stick with private domain
registration. I didn't get my own domain until I found a place with private
domain registration. My neighbor also has private domain registration as
well.

Yes and yes, unless you're a business with a business address separate
from your home, I'd say it's the only way to fly.

Businesses that transact money online and who need some trust from
their customers might not be terribly well received with private
registration, but for sites not needing that public a personna, I say
private is the way to go.

I suggested to my clients especially for women since someone can track
you down by your contact information.
My hosting company provides this option at no additional cost.

Also, there's always a possibility that some smartass will publish your
personal information on Usenet just to get your goat, and there's nothing
(legal) you can do about it.

The concept of having to pay someone NOT to publish your information
seems a bit unreasonable to me. Additionally, the cost is extremely
high considering that you can buy a domain name for that. As long as
consumer don't revolt, however, the expense may be sensible for a
large number of people.

The main problem with this, of course, is that if your provider goes
under, or simply stops responding to support requests, you've got no
easy way to take control of your domain yourself. For a purely
personal site, that might be an acceptable risk, but not if you're
running anything commercial.
