I asked my domain name provider about this and they said it was
"illegal" and against the rules of ICANN. How can GoDaddy and others
do this?

You are talking about private registration.
It was develop to protect people from people coming to your home.
Particularly models.

That probably explains why these damn models keep showing up at my
house, I can barely get in the restroom any more.

Most people I have seen want private reg's for all the wrong reasons,
like "Big Brother" or something criminal. But there are also bots that
used to scan the whois servers and suck up contact info for those
pricks that call at dinner time. Privacy just adds some work to
getting the domain owner info, but keeps us common folk from knowing
who owns what.

Be sure to use the "real" info when purchasing a domain, if there is
any problem, you may need to prove you own it.
