You don't. You buy: example.com
and then you set up a subdomain at your host's configuration panel for
forums.example.com Most hosts will give you several, or even maybe
unlimited, subdomains.

That's a sub-domain. So is www. If you purchase mysite.com,
you can create all the sub-domains that you want.

Domain names are like backwards paths. (probably explains why
java packages tend to be com.example.foo.bar)
For example, forums.mysitename.com can be seen as:
com/mysitename/forums
com is owned by a top head-honcho (and you should generally use example.com for
reasons like this, a false domain has to be resolved going all the way up to
the root servers, but thats another story..)
mysitename "belongs to" com
forums "belongs to" whoever owns mysitename
Thats the idea behind it anyway. (in theory you'd have a different machine configured
there, or partition your resources or whatever)
Some places charge you to add subdomains to their nameservers, in that case, you'd
need to buy it from whoever is running your nameserver.
(don't ask me about who owns .com though.. after 10+ years I still don't understand
how registrars work, seems like a .scam to me..)

yep - the entire concept of TLDs adds nothing of value to the net

Isn't it owned by VeriSign?

So sites like "del.icio.us" are subdomains of www.icio.us?

Almost. "del.icio.us" is a subdomain of "icio.us". "www.icio.us" is also
a subdomain of "icio.us"

But when you go to buy domain names, they put the "www" in for you. Is
that just marketing because everyone is used to it, when in reality the
www is not necessary?

That depends if the server is set up properly. All domains I set up on
my client's Apache server resolve www.foo.com an foo.com to the same
place; You can, however, choose to have them go to completely separate
locations or do different things on loading.
You might have noticed a trend in audio/visual mediums now, when
speaking a URL, to simply say "Visit us at my domain dot com" instead of
"Visit us at double-you double-you double-you dot my domain dot com".

The www is just a subdomain, like any other.
Consider: gopher.example.com.
This would allow you to move your "gopher resources" around without
breaking everything that expects to find them at "gopher.example.com"
I use gopher for a reason, http is just one of many protocols available,
it's hot right now, but some day someone could I suppose, come up with something
better. Maybe gopher's revenge :-)
Being able to say 'www' for WEB service and 'gopher' for gopher service allows
greater flexibility. What if "gopher revenge" needed access to port 80 for
example?
This is often why people will use a subdomain, you can have a new website on
each subdomain with absolute paths in the URL's) Some extreme examples actually
insert a browsers session ID as part of the subdomain. (bad! idea IMO)
On my home network, I use mysql.example.com because it'll allow me to move my
mysql database to any other computer on the network without having to go
through and change all the settings for each application that uses it.
If I did that with a 'www' domain, I could do the same with an intranet web
server.
It's in how you want to organize things. Most folks tend to strip www off, for
easier typing. (a practice I still haven't decided on if it's good or not,
spoze it depends on if you ever wanted to move the 'www' server around I guess)

It's not the domain registrar or registry that put in the "www", it's
your hosting provider that sets up web access to it, which generally
adds the "www" subdomain because this is traditional (though in most
cases they also set up the raw domain to go to the same site).

It's more accurate to say that it's managed by them, under contract
from ICANN. However, the contract has been set up (controversially) to
automatically review and be difficult to revoke, so it practically
amounts to ownership anyway.

In theory it permits categorizations and distinctions between types of
entities, though it's too heavily abused and misunderstood to work very
well as it's intended.
