Noob question on bandwidth
|
|
|
| I have a question on bandwidth. My host allows 250 gb monthly
transfer.
I was wondering exactly what that means. I thought that it meant that
any graphics or downloads etc. count as bandwidth. However, I backed
up my site and downloaded 20 mb of files and then looked at the stats
and it didn't show 20 mb in bandwidth or even 1 mb. Can anyone please
explain this to me.
Thanks...

20MB is 0.09% of 250GB. Are you sure they are advising you of your usage
down to that precision?

And even if they did show such precise figures, it's unlikely that they
update such things in "real time". I'm pretty sure that my own host
doesn't have instant-stats.

Usually, that bandwidth limit only refers to HTTP traffic. Your FTP traffic
is not counted.

John,
It probably does count. Most control panels show the bandwidth used
only by the web server - it doesn't count ftp transfers, email, and
other non-webserver transfers.
But most hosts also count everything. So you can run out before your
control panel shows you've used all of your available transfer. A good
host should give you a warning when you're getting close, though.

Not of FTP transfers I think, but it does on the http requests. Just
click 'update now' at the top of the Awstats page.

if the admin has enabled that functionality.
btw: are you sure we're talking about AWStats here?

Yes, and it's true that it needs to be enabled. But since Dylan is on
the same host as I am, I assume it is :-)

Actually I was talking about the overview that you get from cPanel
rather than the detailed stats you get from AWStats (which I never
bother with 'cos stats are a complete waste of my time and energy!)

I see I misread William's "we're" ...

Unless you care to know your bandwidth in real time - which you could
see by just a few more clicks into the Awstats page ;-)
I don't think those stats are a waste of time though. They're pretty
good to check which words people use to find me in Google, so I could
(potentially - there's a huge gap between my ideas and my actions...)
do a bit of optimizing. They also show me which sites are the worst
leechers, so I can block them.

If you really want to know, ask your host. People her might guess,
might suggest what happens with other hosts, but at the end of the day
your host makes their own rules, ask them to clarify them.

for which there are much better tools - azctually, I can't imagine wanting
to know in r/t unless I was trying to monitor the effect of something
weird - perhaps a one-off TV/Radio exposure.

ummagumma, you don't need a full AWStats for that.

nor that. but I can see the benefit (it's user easy) - but these are not
r/t requirements I think.

Not a word one sees in normal conversation, William. ;-)

Yup, but since you don't want to have to ask your host for extra
features in such an event, it's good that it's already there imo.

True, but...

True again, but since all these options come in one handy package, why
not use it? It's not like I *mind* seeing my keywords and bandwidth in
real time when I'm only looking for last month's totals?

heh - if one is 'seeing' a conversation then I guess it would be fairly
common.

Of course it is... For example: "I have lots of Pink Floyd albums, but
I'm still missing Ummagumma" ;)

For some reason, Ummagumma made it into my collection early on...
