you would not like the extreme temperatures here in the desert.

I'm about 45 miles south of Victoria/Vancouvar ... Bellingham, WA. Sure
could've used an air conditioner more than once this summer and we tried
going without using the furnace last winter. Thank the gods we have a
woodstove and a steady supply of fuel.

That's why it's so GREEN! Portland gets HOT in the summer. Eugene, Oregon
is further south, less wet and a bit more moderate. BTW, I've lived in all
these places :)

if I may ask, what desert area are you in, Steven?

Yes, that is the problem in life.....it's hard to find the perfect
weather/pace.

I don't want to jump out of the fridge and into the frying pan......nor to
go to an area of natural disasters, eg earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes,
etc.

how hot/cold does it get across the year there, Judy?

I've been put off by the cold temps of canada..even in BC.

And that north western area, at the top left corner of the usa, makes me
think of rainy depressing Seattle. :(

The hottest it's been here this summer is 85F and average summer temp is
70F. Winter seldom (like once in a blue moon) sees sub-zero temps. We
have a good share of rain but very little snow.

i know what you mean

I am just seeing what is available over there. I had researched usa a fair
few times - but had always ruled it out on a number of scores.

My main love these past 9 months is New Zealand...up in the northern region
- northland - of north island

As for Ireland - VERY expensive, and wet/cold for most of the year.

I think Charles will correct me if I am wrong, but over in Scotland (which
is at the same latitude as me here, they have record suicide numbers. This
weather woudl depress anybody.

BTW we have record numbers leaving the UK and Ireland. In a survey
yesterday, they found that over 10 million people in the UK want to leave
(we have a 60 million population)

Apple Valley, California. San Bernardino County has the distinction of
being the largest county in the US, stretching three hours from Riverside
county almost to Las Vegas (south to north), and from the Antelope Valley
to the Arizona border east to west. We touch both Nevada and Arizona.

This region is huge, but is mostly unpopulated north of Interstate Highway
40. In fact, on I-15, if you drive from Apple Valley to Las Vegas, there
is absolutely nothing other than tons of dirt on either side of the freeway
between Baker and the Nevada state line, except at Mountain Pass where there
is a small strip mine.

This area sits on the San Andreas Fault, but we don't have much in the way of
earthquakes. There was a 4.5 an hour south last year, and it shook the Victor
Valley, including my neighborhood, but up here it wasn't even strong enough
to rattle dishes off the shelves.

Los Angeles and San Francisco are more prone to earthquakes because they are
on a network of fault lines, and even they aren't bad. I was in Northridge
this past spring, that's the site of the big 1994 quake, and it was completely
quiet.

You need to worry more about brush fires than earthquakes if you live here,
and brush fires are generally easy to avoid if you don't have tons of weeds
in your yard (which is against the law anyhow).

looking here at the above website, Steve...wow, 65 degrees and very
little humidity (32 percent) - sounds lovely.

Are you ghigh up? My friend in Reno, Nevada is at 4500 feet.....makes
for essentially no humidity....tho the extremes are big (ie when the
summer is over, the daily temps fall VERY quickly)

Yes, i can picture it being sparsely populated and lots of nothingness on
either side of the highway for vast stretches.

yes, i have seen a fair few fires on our tv news, from CA in recent
years.

I guess with so little water at times, everything is tinderbox dry.

PS - been looking today at another tip in this thread re Eugene in

That must have been relatively early. There's a 30-35 degree difference btw.

during the day, in the summer.

Ignore the 2003 fires, they were an anomaly, they don't get that big if they
are just accidents. Everyone pretty much agrees that it was probably arson
that caused those fires.

Not so much, really. We don't have seasonal monsoons here or anything.
More of a soft, ocean mist most mornings ... we've had lots of clouds
lately but no rain. Water is unmetered for a flat-rate per/month so I can
keep my garden green. Our water comes from Whatcom Falls and Lake Whatcom.
The oil pipeline exploded here some years back, killed a couple of young
boys playing on the creek. We are sharply divided in the community re eco-
restoration and preservation issues. Folks with speed boats want to have
thier drunken outings on our major water supply for most of our zip-code.

Our politics are rotten. Dems/Reps = same/same ... on the same team but
wear different colors to look like a two-party system. We are on the left
coast so our vote doesn't count. By the time our polls close, the winner's
already been announced. The electorial-college system sucks. We don't get
much help from the feds because we tend to reject thier money and
influence. We are less religious and more spiritual. We are less
prejudiced and more curious. If the notion of self-governance has a chance
to succeed, it would be in Cascadia. There are caves here, in the
foothills. We have lots of public lands, land that belongs to the
citizenry of this country. See, it's illegal for our government to own and
control property ... but it's not illegal for a corporation to do it.
That's why our government incorporated and ... you know the rest. Has to
to with Delaware and zip-codes and representation. Totally XXX-backwards
from the way it was probably set-up ... People here don't know thier
history.

Soon to be further restricted. California has state-line border crossings
as does Arizona. I'm sure there's more but those are the only one's I've
encountered, personally. Our rail and bus systems have been virtually
ignored by homeland security and are likely a focus for further clamp-
downs. I wouldn't be surprised if our national ids become our domestic
travel visas. The European Eastern Block looks more like we did and vice-
versa circa the '70s/'80s. We have 400 to 600 domestic containment camps
that are prepped. For what and whom, I can only guess. But we're on the
verge of our own political revolution and I still can't figure out why sir
robert wants to move here. Is it really that much worse in the rest of the
world?

Look at the map here: http://local.yahoo.com/?csz=Point+Roberts%2C+WA
Zoom out until you see that Point Roberts is part of the U.S, Whatcom

of course - gated communities cost more when they're designed to keep
people out - much cheaper to keep folk in.

Is there a word missing there - or is that short form for something I
should understand?

Population mobility is terrifying - if you are a govt.

In any event, the well-heeled I was referring to earlier mainly restricted
their seasonal migrations to mainland europe - until the (19)60s when
cheap air travel saw a little variety added to the mix.

Addenda

That one got so bad a decade and a half ago that for a year or something
like that, groups of helicopters flew nighttime formations over Los
Angeles County (and I don't know what else) spraying malathion. The
schedules were published so you'd know when to cover your cars.

Judy, thanks for all the great links.

I am busy looking through those sites and related sites...........so far
seen Roche Harbor (looks lovely, tho low lying area).

Busy here on Moon Bay.

I will report back.

PS - I don't ideally want to live in the USA, because like you say,
Bush's regime have changed everything :(. But I want to just run my
research over it one final time.

Canada would be a lot better I imagine....thus why Vancouver Island has
some interest for me.

and weatherbase.com

I like the sound of the folks there.

wow, thanks for that great synopsis, of that area, Judy!

We are now having our water metered from 2007 - bastids.

Is cost of living high there? eg utility costs; annual house tax?

I ultimately think that the USA is not for me - I just don't like the way
that usa and uk are heading in.

New Zealand is really hard to beat, based on all my research.

Canada looks good - if only it had the weather..and vancouver looks low
lying - according to weatherbase (I looked at it tonight), 7 feet above
sea level.

I was just on holiday there. It's been overrun by retirees, and property
prices have been driven up by speculators.

Having said that, Courtenay/Comox has a lot going for it. Victoria has been
discussed here earlier. And you might want to take a look at Nanaimo.

thanks Robert.

I had a look there for those places.......very nice.

I must look some more tonight when I get a chance.

Aye, it is very hard to find anywhere where property prices have not gone
thru the roof.

Cali does have, not necessarily full border crossing stations, but they do
have agricultural stations where they'll pull you over and inspect your car,
for reasons described upthread. I've been through the one on I-15 coming south
from Nevada and the one on I-40 west of the AZ border.
