Wish I could use 1&1 but need an alternative provider
|

| I've used 1&1 for webhosting in the past and was very content with
their features, service and pricing. I'd use them again. Problem is,
that I am no longer in Germany and I am not aware that 1&1 is located
outside of Germany or Austria. As such, 1&1 does not allow payment with
credit card and opening a bank account in Germany is not an option.
Can someone recommend some alternative to 1&1 who competes at the same
level. The basic features I need are:
* Windows server
* Lots of bandwidth and disk space
* SQL Server support
* Good website statistics
Nice-to-have would be some e-Commerce support.
Thanks
Polaris

| I was interested in using 1&1 also, but people had posted some negative
things about their responsiveness and help desk. I would be interested
in knowing more. Have they improved?

1&1 is available in the US and the UK. If you are satisfied with them
(I am), check it out. You don't say where you are so it is difficult
to say what's available to you.

The last time I used them was about 2 years ago before I left Germany.
I can only speak for the German branch of 1&1 and they had excellent
service.

I'm in Israel. There's no service in this country even worth talking
about.

ipower doesn't look bad but it is definitely no comparison to 1&1. It's
like the difference between a VW Golf and a Mercedes. The features from
1&1 are simply staggering and I have yet to find anyone who even
approaches their level or quality of service.

I thought the era of silly sounding tech company names was over, but
have been proven wrong once again.

I am in the US. Anyone know how the 1&1 service is there?

Check with 1&1 US (1and1.com) or UK (oneandone.co.uk). Maybe they can
help you in Israel? Opening a bank account in the US or UK may work if
need be? If all else fails, do you know anyone in the US or UK that
may be able to help you? Someone else also posted 1&1 addresses for
France and another country that I don't remember. It sounds like they
are very well connected. That's one of the things I like about them;
I've not experienced any significant downtime yet with my sites
although I have had some pretty slow response times once in a while;
that could be my ISP though. I've been with 1&1 now for about six
months or a little better.

We have ~ 50 clients that use them. System works fine, tech support sucks
consisting mostly of references to canned PDF solutions that are force fit
to whatever the problem might be.
