I've been hitting the random user search to see all the crazy shit people
search for.

That's pretty funny. I found one that was searching for dragon tattoos
and cheese cake recipes.

People are _still_ typing URL's into search boxes I see...

I really hope this just represents the AOL population and not the
average user.

The really bizarre thing is that the number one search term on AOL is
"google".

I see clients doing this all the time. That's how they get to a site.
Their home page is usually either Yahoo or MSN. They want google.com for
instance, they type it in the home page's search box, get google as the
first return, and click that. I explain things to them the first time I
see them doing it, but they never change. The search box on home pages
like Yahoo and MSN "grabs" the cursor, so that when these people start IE
and their home page comes up, when they start typing a url it goes into
the search. A lot of them (typical non-tech home users) are totally
unaware of the address bar's function. They've never used it, ever.

The foolish ingenuity of some users never ceases to amaze me. We once
had a smallish redesign of an internal website which meant moving a
page to a new URL. Got a call from a user complaining that the page
was "broken". I asked if she'd followed the new links from the
Intranet home page, and was told "no, I always go straight there from
the dropdown options". I figured she meant bookmarks (or favorites, if
you're using IE), and suggested that she follow the links from the
homepage this once and then re-bookmark the new location.

"How do I do that?" she asked. I was a bit puzzled - how could she
have bookmarked the page in the first place without knowing how to do
it? So I took a walk to her department and asked her to show me what
she was doing. It turned out that she was typing the first few letters
of the Intranet URL into the address bar, waiting for auto-complete to
bring up a list of previously visited sites and then selecting from
that. And that was how she got to all the Intranet pages - the idea of
navigating round the system, typing a URL in full, or using bookmarks,
was something that had never previously occurred to her. She thought
that because it was the Intranet, not "the web", it had to be done
differently. After all, Intranet addresses don't begin with "www", so
it can't be the same as the web, can it?

I know. My mother keeps doing that (having Google as her start page),
even after several attempts on my part to show her the location of the
address bar on her screen. Even though it will save her one click, she
only uses the address bar once or twice after each time I show her, but
as soon as I lean back on the couch, she goes back to using the search
field on the Google start page. I've basically given up on that
particular subject.

We had this discussion years ago!

Interesting to see that people are still doing that.
