Is Skype any good?
|
|
|
|
Hi
Probably slightly "off message" but I just wondered if any of you guys
have
been using Skype yet?
Is it any good?
How bad are the VOIP delays?
What is the voice quality like?
Is there anything better/cheaper that you'd recommend?

I know several people using it, including my brother. It seems very
good! No delay (when he calls my cell). I only use my cell phone
though, so not sure Skype would be much use to me personally.

Not noticed any delays tbh.

As good or better than talking on a regular phone, ime.

For talking to other Skype users, no. I haven't actually used it for
calling a landline yet, and I probably won't seeing as I get 500 minutes
with my mobile phone and never manage to use them all anyway, so I can't
comment on that aspect.

for what? I only use for talking to other skype users.
MSN has a similar voice option.

Not as good as using your own voip server or a good service from
professional service providers

Hi Dylan,
Strictly speaking 'Programming' is being used here as a present
participle so:
Programming, v(erb): A pastime similar to banging one's head
against a wall, but with fewer opportunities for reward.
Yours pedantically :-)

I'm not going to argue this, because I cannot be bothered :P It's merely
a quote from somewhere (I forget where) and thus I ain't changing it ;)

been using it for donkeys ages
> Is it any good?
it's excellent.
> How bad are the VOIP delays?
not a problem usually.
> What is the voice quality like?
far far better than phone quality.
A friend called me recently on my phone from Madeira (some 2000 miles
away) and the audio quality sounded superb. He told me that he was
calling me via skype, from his pc. It was recording studio like quality.
Sometimes, i have been chatting to my friend in Reno on skype (I use
skype each night), and my isp has gone down. I end up calling her then
on the regular phone...and the drop in quality (from speaking on skype
and then a few minutes later having to make do with a regular phone line)
is massive.
You'll prefer skype to a regular phone call.
> Is there anything better/cheaper that you'd recommend?
none that I have found to date.
I have tried several others - google talk, yahoo messenger chat thingie,
and a load of others.
None compare to skype.

Use it a lot. I'm based in France, but most of my clients are in the UK and
US, and we have friends & family in the UK.

Excellent, generally (this is across a 1Mbit/sec WiMax connection). Often
better than we get with 'landlines' (I put quotes around that because I
guess a lot of our conversations go via satellite when using the normal
phone network). We rarely get the echo that seems a common feature when
talking to the UK across the normal, steam-driven telephone.
> Is there anything better/cheaper that you'd recommend?
Nothing I've found that gives quite the same flexibility. We've bought
SkypeOut credits so we can call non-Skype users at very cheap rates. We've
also bought a SkypeIn number, so though we're in France, people can call us
using our 'London' phone number. Also, unlike some services - eg, VoIP
services that come with broadband packages - it's not tied to a specific
connection or device. That means I can use my Skype account on a laptop
sitting in a wifi-providing cafe as easily as I do at home.

Yes - but few use real names. so you have to exchange skype address using
'traditional' comms first, much like MSN/Jabber/Y!
You build a directory of contacts in the same way and you can see if they
are online & accepting calls.
Skyp also has a regular IM interface - with quite a funky interface.

| eBay bought Skype for $2,600,000,0000
billions, not millions
Does that answers your question?
