| I'm seeing the word Permalink a lot now.....
Every time I see it, It's just a link pointing to the page I'm already
looking at, bearing the 'permalink'...
Am I missing something glaringly obvious here?....What's the point to
them?.....

Permanent Link

There are quite a lot of sites where a page contains the most recent X
articles. After enough new articles are written, the older ones will drop
off the page. A permalink goes to a URL where that article will be
(theoretically) permanently available.

The pages I've seen it on are pages of seemingly static info, and the link
tends to point to the very page that bears the link.....I just don't see the
point in those cicumstances.....

Sounds like lazy template authoring :)

I'm using this kind of thing on a couple of my sites. The main reason I
display permalinks is to achieve shorter URLs. For instance,
In the Screen Eagles section of www.lomcovak.com, you pull up details of a
specific movie using a URL like:
<http://www.lomcovak.com/avmovies/mo...=display&ref=24>
That's obviously quite long and messy but the parameters are needed to pull
the relevant record from the database and create the page. But you can also
use:
<http://www.lomcovak.com/mf/24/>
An .htaccess rule rewrites this URL changing it to the first one.
Now, when the shorter URL is displayed on the page, I've made it an actual
link. Clicking on it just reloads the same page, but the point is it's
recognised as a link by a browser. That makes it easier to copy or
whatever. For example, in Firefox, you can right-click and use functions
such as 'Send link...' or 'Copy link location'. I guess it's also possible
that search engines might follow it too, and therefore index the page with
the short URL as well as the long one, but I don't know enough about how
they work to be certain about that.

That's not a good way to get help. Andy was trying to do you a favor.
The subject line you used usually won't get read by many. I don't
bother reading the originals with non-informative subjects, but
sometimes will read a response or two just out of curiosity,
especially if the poster is someone whose views I respect. I didn't
even notice until your "fo" post that it was you; I truly thought you
were better than that as usually I think, you take good advice.
