Hi,

I'm in the process to set up my 1st commercial website and I'm a bit
lost... I haven't finished to create it, so I don't need a web host for
the moment. I just would like to get my domain name registered before
someone takes it.
But I'm getting a bit confused... When I buy a domain name, should I
get a DNS straight away with the same registrar even if I'm not going
to run my website for a year ?
Also most registrar offer some packages about getting an email
accounts, space and so on, but that's to do with hosting anyway,
doesn't it?
Basically what do I need to do at the same time as registering my
domain name, and what should I pay attention to when choosing a
registrar?

No. Just register the domain.

Correct. Just register the domain.

The registrar will eventually (usually) provide you with DNS service.
This can make a dramatic difference in performance. Some registrars
will also propagate DNS faster. They also offer different user
interfaces. I have some sites registered with Network Solutions and
others registered with TucCows (Domain Direct). Personally, I would
stick to the brand names. You often get what you pay for.

I would never risk an important site to a cheap registrar but that's
just me.

Just one thing I didn't get : what do you mean by "different user
interfaces"?

Also, I wanted to ask : Is it possible to buy a .com domain name for
more than 10 years?
What happens if your business gets successful and the registrar accept
to renew your registration only for a ridiculous amount of money in 10
years time?

And how long before the expiry date do you need to renew your
registration to make sure no one gets a chance to "steal" your domain
name? How many days does it take to renew it?

exactly that I'd guess. Some Registrars are better than others at gui
design.

not at present

move to a registrar with a better attitude?

frankly, unless the domain reg biz takes a serious about turn I can't see
prices heading back where they were but a few short years ago.

well if you have it registered for ten years and keep it topped up every
year than that issue will never arise will it.

At some point you will want to set up DNS. Some of the registrars
have web interfaces that are more intuitive and provide better
guidance than others. Some are downright crude.

Don't know.

You transfer the domain to a different registrar but that won't
happen. You own the domain - not the registrar.

One day. You can usually set up an auto-renewal with a credit card.

as I understood it, you don't actually "own" the domain (name), you just pay
a licence fee to use it for that period of time.
