Using Windows I use a combination of the Gimp and Paint Shop Pro.

Not that this should be taken as any recommendation of either of these
products.

Generally, I don't create graphics, but I do edit images.

Paint Shop Pro has served me very well, but more recently I have been using
the very good (free) XnView http://www.xnview.com

Fireworks - any version. Great program for any type of web graphics. I just
upgraded to Fireworks 8 and really like it. Should you decide to use it, I
would also recommend www.lynda.com for their video tutorials because it's a
tough program to dig through on your own.

Photoshop Elements - v2 (I don't like the new interface as of version 3)

generally runs about $20-50 on ebay

I never got into that software...what draws people to it? (apart from
being free)

Are you related to the brave Sir Robert Blake, who continually battles
against the mighty dragon of political corruption?

I can only speak for myself, but I like The GIMP simply because it's a
very capable graphics tool.

I used to use Paint Shop Pro on Windows, but after I switched to a better
operating system, I was no longer able to run PSP. So I asked around for
what was the best Linux-based image editing program and the resounding
answer was The GIMP. I picked up a copy (version 1.2-ish as I recall) and
started using.

The interface was a little clunky, but has improved partly as a result of
my own familiarity with it increasing; and partly as a result of interface
changes in later versions.

Since then I've never found it lacking in a feature I need, so have never
found the need to look around for a replacement -- The GIMP does the job,
does the job well, and does the job for no initial down-payment.

this is the one and same, Sir Toby.

In order to further infiltrate the establishment, I decided to accept
their offer of a lordship.

You have got me interested again. I must download the latest version. I
had tried the software on a couple lof occasions - the last time being
maybe a couple of years ago. but I had quickly dispensed with it -
clunky interface, and seemed very basic in features.

I see you mention Linux. Ye-haaaa.....I have been tempted for ages to
try it. i was reading an article this week which said that loads of
developers are working on linux now - and now have similar numbers as to
those working on windows.

It would be great if linux were to take over. I am fed up with Gate's
dominance of the market.
