Author The Value of Sitemaps

I've been encouraging websters to start utilizing Google compatible
sitemaps and there are alot of doubting thomases that don't believe they
are effective. Well, the proof is in.

About four days ago I uploaded a video to my site, embedded in a static
page and, as of yesterday, Google was pointing searchers right to it.

I'm talking about the USS Enterprise link in my sig. The DoD managed to
bully Google Video into removing the video from their server. Other sites
have also buckled and I happened to get it from a soonly retiring Navy man.

I didn't realize how poplular the video was until Google started pointing
folks to my site in mini-droves. I won't buckle, will I? It's important
to me because it puts a human face on the cannon fodder that are the
backbone of the US military/industrial complex. If we can't see coffins
coming home, it's nice to know that our guys have some fun along the way.

So, back on topic, if you want Google to pick your site up right away ...
not just the main entry pages but all the goodies hidden in the cracks,
create and submit a sitemap to Google Sitemaps.

There are many sitemap generators but I use AuditMyPC.com
<http://www.auditmypc.com/> If you have a CMS or blog feed, Google will
pick that up as well. The sooner you submit your sitemap, the quicker
Google learns about your site and indexes your additions almost instantly.

Not that it matters (tic).

I agree. No downside. Within seconds of updating the sitemap, Google
is paying us a visit. BTW, I use the software supplied by Google.

Google sitemaps have been on my mind for the past few days. i downloaded
one script for making a sitemap yesterday..and was gonna ask in here re the
best script/software to use.

Thus your post was so timely for me. I am gonna download that auditpc one
that you recommend.

Many thanks.

If I can plug myself (since it's on topic!), if you'd like site search
functionality along with your sitemap, my search script (see sig) can
automatically generate them based on indexed pages. ;)

hey not just Google sitemaps. it's been known for a long time that having a
page of simple text links featuring every page on your site linked directly
to your home page is great for getting crawled (although is can skew rank).

not to say that Google XML site maps aren't something of a magic bullet just
now.

all the sudden incywincy.com showed up as a top referrer on one of my sites.
it(t's website) says it spiders around looking for other bots and search
engines which it then indexes content from. i dunno.

Advice please.
I get the impression that there are 'sitemaps' and then there are
'sitemaps'.
Would someone care to look at
http://www.bugsandweeds.co.uk/sitemap.html
and tell me if that diy 'sitemap' measures up to the Google
interpretation of a 'sitemap'?

Gogle are looking for this kind of thing if you're subbed to their Sitemaps
service.....
http://www.norfolklupus.co.uk/nlg_sitemap.xml

Having said that, the page you posted there would still be irresistably
juicy an delicious to the spider, and I can't see any reason why it won't
work fine......

absolute certaincy that my sitemap is the reason :-)

That's a user-friendly, html sitemap. Very useful and a wonderful addition
to site navigation. The sort of sitemap Google is looking for is a
dynamically updated XML file.

happy 6-6-06 :)

Doesn't even have to necessarily be dynamically updated either to be
something they can use to crawl your site more efficiently.

One less file to hassle with every time you update your site. I can live
with just indicating "<changefreq>daily</changefreq>" for my most
frequently updated pages; I don't need to stick the exact date and time in
there and I don't see who would unless you're CNN or somebody like that. I
haven't changed my sitemap.xml file since first uploading it in June '05
since my updating habits haven't changed, it's just been a "set & forget"
thing.
