How is 1and1.com as a registrar? Other low cost registrars?
|
|
|
| They charge $5.99/yr for .com, .org, .net.
I assume they do this at a slight loss to draw business for their
hosting operation.
I heard not so great things about the hosting side of 1and1 and am
curious how the registrar side is?
I'm looking to bail on registerfly.com as their error rate is creeping
up (like saying I am transfering a domain when I just renew one)
I'm considering godaddy.com and namecheap.com
Any others to consider?

I would recommend GoDaddy. Low cost, good service.

I'm also with Registerfly. I can't even renew a domain name without an
error. Although, they don't have any problems charging my credit card
though - they do that first! Then they sent me an email telling me my credit
card has been charged but there was an error renewing my domain. No solution
to the problem, just the fact there was a problem.
When I called them, the guy on the phone told me that they were having a
problem assorbing another company they just bought out. His voice had that
*I only work here and don't give a shit* sound. I told him I'd had the same
problem renewing another domain name. That was over two months ago. He then
changed the subject.
I have about ten good names with them. I'm worried, I want out. I get the
impression there are serious internel problems or something else more
serious with this company.
I'm not sure where to head to, suggestions also appreaciated.
Thanks

I use 1and1 and they are very good, I have been with them since 2001,
(registrar and hosting), and they are very good.
Their servers are in Germany.
I also use registerfly.com, (when domains are pushed to my account), but I
transfer my account as soon as practical. They are by far the worst 'big'
registrar.
godaddy is also very good but their control panel is a bit of a pain to use
IMHO.

No major problems with the technical side of 1and1.com although their
support is a bit goofy. They know what they are doing but don't seem to be
able to convey that information to their clients. My biggest complaint is
you read their FAQ and web site instructions send in a specific question and
get a link to the FAQ in response.
I do have problems with their auto renew process as we've a number of
accounts we manage that need to use a specified CC for the renewal and they
are ALWAYS using the wrong credit card account.

Agreed. It's a couple bucks more than $5.99 (not much more), but unless
you have thousands of domains, I can't see any reason to skimp...

I've been reading up on Registerfly, Godaddy, NameCheap and 1and1 and
the winner is....
NameCheap
It had the fewest complaints by far but is $8.88/yr
Anyone have any history with:
AitDomains.com $6.49/yr
DomainSite.com $6.99/yr basic $7.99/yr full
BlazeDomains.com $6.99/yr
These are some of the places I looked. (Man, has Google Groups become
lame or what?)

Why do you say that? What is the worse that could happen?
Don't you think we would have time to act?

Simon, I don't have a dog in this hunt, but I have no idea who you are
responding to. You included the quote but left out the poster.

Sorry, I am still trying to get used to outlook.
It insists on putting my reply at the top, so I have to delete everything.
I was replying to jj. What newsreader are you using that you could not tell
who I was replying to in a thread of just over 10 posts?

Whose DNS are you going to use? I have found that NS propagates new
domains faster and they resolve faster than others, including TuCows
and Goddady. However, that is an anecdotal observation that is
unproven.

There is no difference in the domain names offered by different
registrars. joe.us works exactly the same as murphy.com works exactly
the same as linux.ms (MS is the geographical TLD for Montserrat.)
The difference is in the hosting. If you have real domain hosting, all
your URLs can contain the domain name. If you are are only able to use
the domain name with one page, your domain is being hosted on one
server, and your site is on another. That's sometimes called
"latching" (and a few choice 4-letter words) and it's an kludge that
is usually used only by idiots. Real domain hosting is dirt cheap.

When you register a domain name, you can freely create subdomains.
Whether you can *use* those subdomains depends on your hosting, not on
your domain registration.
If you set up a server for IP-based hosting, the server can look at
the URL, and use the domain name to customize the pages served. Some
multi-level organizations do this, plugging in the name of the sponsor
to pages. Or you could have a fake "news site" where the subdomain is
sued to generate fake news stories. If the domain is
"Frank.fakenews.tld", the headline and story tells about something
absurd that happened to Frank, but if the domain is
"susan.fakenews.tld", it says that it happened to Susan instead. And
you can set it up so that ANY subdomain name works.
Any competent sysop can set up something like that for you, if he
spends 20 minutes trying to figure it out. Some hosting companies will
want a premium for doing that, some will do it for free, some won't do
it at all. (You'd have to have a plan with a dedicated IP to do that,
in any case.) Hosting companies are often hesitant to take on strange
hosting requests, figuring that it takes so much support manpower that
the hosting will prove unprofitable.
But the registrar makes NO difference whatsoever. Find one you can
trust, that sells the top level domain you are interested in, at a
price you are willing to pay. If you get the first two right, the
third requirement is rarely going to be a problem.

I have used 1and1 for several years now - initially the service was
very good, the call centre was in the same country as I and support
issues were dealt with swiftly. Recently I lost my credit card, their
automated system wouldnt accept the number of my new one as valid - it
wouldnt accept my debit cards address and after a week of trying to get
through to billing (all lines busy, try later *hangs up*) my domain has
been locked for non payment.
I have no email through my domains, and the three customers who i have
in my package now also have no email and no websites...
Consider me unhappy! Now have to transfer 7 domains somewhere else...
Good luck to anyone else with 1and1
